Emporia State student donates money from his own relief fund to help a Chinese exchange student

Emporia State defensive tackle Justin Wilson isn’t exactly a household name, but he’s a hero for one Chinese exchange student and her family back in China.

Yali Huang was walking across the Emporia State campus when a car struck her. The accident left her in a coma for several weeks and when she came out of it, she was left with severe brain damage.

Wilson heard about the accident and decided to help.

Last summer, Wilson and his family lost everything when their home in Luther, Okla., was destroyed by a wildfire. The Emporia State community rallied around Wilson and started a fund to help his family get back on its feet.

As Wilson was about to close the fund, he heard of the Huang family’s struggles to pay their medical bill and ultimately get their daughter back to China, and Wilson decided to use the money left in the fund - $1,030 – to help the family get home.

"I just wanted to give you this, because back before I came to school I lost everything and everybody helped me out," Wilson told the family through an interpreter. "I thought it would be right to help you guys in your time of need."

Thanks to stories of Huang’s injuries and Wilson’s kindness, the family has raised more than $30,000, which is in a fund in the Bank of America in Wichita, Kan. Charges have not be filed against the driver who hit Huang as the Lyon County attorney is still reviewing the case.

Even though Wilson and Huang had never met and cannot communicate, he’s help change her life and her family’s live forever.

"She's a Hornet, I'm a Hornet,” Wilson said. “At the end of the day we've just got to stick together with each other.”
