Devonte Fields' football career at TCU is over.

A TCU spokesperson told ESPN that Fields has been permanently separated from the university. Fields had previously announced his intention to transfer to Stephen F. Austin but that was scuttled after Stephen F. Austin announced that TCU had ruled him ineligible for the 2014 season as he wasn't eligible to attain a one-time transfer waiver.

As a redshirt sophomore, he could play at a junior college in 2014. He'll be eligible for the NFL draft at the end of the season.

Fields was suspended from TCU after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend on July 20. He turned himself to police in on a misdemeanor assault charge on July 24. His ex-girlfriend said that Fields punched and threatened her in the incident.

While he was suspended from TCU, a source told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Fields was unlikely to return to the university. It's now official.

Fields was the preseason 2014 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He missed 10 games in 2013 because of suspension (two) and a foot injury (eight), but was practicing well enough to receive enough votes for the award. As a freshman in 2012, he had 10 sacks.
