Alabama linebackers coach calls himself a ‘Johnny Manziel groupie’

No matter what your opinion is of Johnny Manziel’s actions off the field, it’s hard not to be a fan of the Heisman winner’s on-field capabilities.

Count Alabama linebackers coach Lance Thompson as a fan of Manziel.

“I’m a Johnny Manziel groupie because we’ve watched him so much,” Thompson said to a football club in Mobile, Ala.

While Manziel and Texas A&M have split two games against the Crimson Tide over the past two years, Manziel has torched the nation’s top-ranked defense for 717 yards and seven touchdowns through the air and 190 yards on the ground.

Thompson named Manziel, along with the Tide’s AJ McCarron and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, as one of the three most deserving candidates for this year’s Heisman.

“One, we haven’t stopped the cat yet, and two, he got better from last year to this year,” Thompson said. “Johnny sees the field as well as anybody I’ve ever played against. He reminds me of Fran Tarkenton.”
