School apologizes after Jim Boeheim's daughter is taunted during H.S. game

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim's daughter, Jamie, was taunted in her school's state semifinal basketball game on Friday. Now, the principal from the other school has issued a formal apology to the freshman and her teammates.

Jamie came into the game in the fourth quarter. As soon as she took the floor, students from Albertus Magnus (Nanuet, N.Y.) started yelling, "Where's the cheater!" in reference to the violations committed by Syracuse's coaching staff, which ranged from from academic misconduct, to impermissible benefits from boosters, to drug testing policy violations.

Boeheim had said Thursday that he had no personal involvement in any of the misconduct, and that he will appeal the sanctions. Though he'd been at Jamie's games earlier that week, he was not at the game Friday.

The Albertus Magnus students had been heckling Jamesville-DeWitt players throughout the game, but the chant hurled at Jamie seemed the most personal, according to Syracuse.com.

Within minutes, Jamie hit a basket, and the taunting died down. She handled it well, telling Syracuse.com that she just tries to block everything out. "I'm a Boeheim so I'm expecting some, but I just ignore it," she said. Her Jamesville-DeWitt team went on to win 56-33 to advance to the state final.

Even if she's able to brush it off, Albertus Magnus principal Joseph Troy wanted to make sure she knows that she never should have had to deal with it in the first place. He wrote an apology to the entire team, but specifically mentioned Jamie.

“Our students violated our Mission Statement which includes ‘showing respect for the dignity of each person,'” Troy wrote. “We plan to meet with the student body to discuss appropriate behavior during sporting events.”
