Kentucky gets another in the stable: Eloy Vargas

e must apologize for all the Wildcats-related news that's come about on this blog ever since the season ended. Fact is, John Calipari and the frenzied state of Big Blue Nation dictate just how much information is out there that must be delivered to the masses. Every time Kentucky does something, it creates a stir in the college basketball world.
Such a thing happened this afternoon, as Kentucky brought in yet another player of probable impact. Scout's Evan Daniels broke the news that former Florida big man Eloy Vargas would make the transition within the SEC East and head up north to Lexington.
Vargas graduated high school in 2008, transferred out of the Florida program last year, averaged 25 and 13 while killing time in the interim at Miami-Dade Community College, and finally chose his destination a few hours ago.
He's 6-11, has two years of eligibility left and can help fill the void that's left by big men Patrick Patterson, Daniel Orton and DeMarcus Cousins staying in the NBA Draft.
Now, while it's a little disconcerting that Vargas saw practically no playing time for Billy Donovan — and that Vargas never made one shot in his time there — it should be noted Vargas did have an ankle injury and was limited. Now, I don't expect him to produce anything close to what Cousins did, but there's no doubt UK had to bring in someone taller than 6-8 if it wanted to have a chance at the Final Four in 2011. It has that now.
Vargas, who is from Hollywood, Fla., was recently believed to be weighing his options at Arizona. But Cal did what Cal does. He swooped in during the supposed 11th hour and took another coveted prospect away from everybody else.
