Injuries to Doug McDermott, Grant Gibbs mar Creighton’s victory over DePaul

For a team that left Allstate Arena unbeaten in Big East play and 13-2 overall, Creighton now has some major concerns.

Its best player reportedly couldn't raise his left arm above his shoulder without wincing. And one of its other key starters reportedly walked out of the locker room on crutches after injuring his right knee in the first half of an 81-62 rout of DePaul.

National player of the year candidate Doug McDermott (shoulder) and point guard Grant Gibbs (knee) will both undergo MRIs on Wednesday to determine the severity of their respective injuries. McDermott told SI.com he thinks he'll be fine in a few days, but the prognosis for Gibbs sounds less promising.

"It’s more serious than Doug, but until you get an MRI to look at it, it’s really hard to say," Creighton coach Greg McDermott told SI.com. "Obviously worst-case scenario, he tore an ACL. Best-case, it’ll be just a minor deal, and in a few weeks we’ll have him back.”

The younger McDermott suffered the injury late in the first half when he ran shoulder-first into the chest of a DePaul defender while making a cut. He found a way to score a gritty 19 points on 6 of 16 shooting against Depaul despite being unable to shoot a jump shot in the second half.

Gibbs injured his right knee during a first-half battle for a rebound. The sixth-year senior point guard did play the final 25 minutes.
