Kentucky fans want UPS to pull ad featuring Laettner’s buzzer-beater

Kentucky fans should be in royal blue heaven right now. Their team, led by presumptive national player of the year Anthony Davis, is the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament and a prohibitive favorite to cut down the nets three weeks from now in New Orleans. Yet some still can't get past a shot that happened nearly 20 years ago.

A pocket of fans, led by a Kentucky state senator, are voicing opposition to a new UPS commercial that breaks down Grant Hill's famed pass to Christian Laettner in the 1992 East Regional final.

"I think it would be wise for them to pull the ad," state Sen. Ernie Harris told the Louisville Courier-Journal. Lest you think Harris isn't qualified to speak on such topics, he graduated from Kentucky, piloted UPS planes and is chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.

Here's the offending advertisement:

Aren't Kentucky fans desensitized to that shot by now? Watch a few hours of the tournament and you're bound to see the Laettner shot a half-dozen times. The only thing CBS shows more is procedural dramas. One thinks Kentucky fans have bigger fish hilltoppers to fry than a shot that happened seven years before the team won their last national championship.

UPS told the newspaper that it would continue running the ads.

What's most offensive is that the commercial doesn't make any sense. Are we supposed to assume UPS carelessly throws our packages and owes their success, in part, to Rick Pitino's decision not to put a man on the baseline?
