Defending champ UConn finally may have run out of chances

    (US Presswire)

No matter how hard defending national champion UConn works to prove it has no interest in participating in the NCAA tournament this March, we in the media simply refuse to give the Huskies' spot in the field of 68 to someone else.

They had to lose for a sixth time in seven games earlier this month to stop receiving votes in both polls. They had to drop two more home games to Syracuse and Marquette before most would acknowledge they were finally in real trouble. Then even after UConn blew a 14-point second-half lead and suffered a  72-70 loss at the hands of rebuilding Providence on Tuesday night, there were still some arguing the Huskies belonged in the field.

Granted UConn's No. 30 RPI, top-rated strength schedule and handful of quality wins are enough to merit consideration, but how many chances do the Huskies have to squander before we're willing to slam the door on them for good? They've lost nine of their last 12 games to fall to 17-12 overall and 7-10 in the Big East with just a game against Pittsburgh left on the regular season schedule.

It's not like there aren't teams playing well down the stretch who wouldn't gladly take UConn's spot either.

CAA regular season champ Drexel and runner-up VCU have lost a combined one game since mid-January, but neither of them is an NCAA tournament lock due to lackluster non-league performances. Long Beach State went undefeated in its own conference, yet it may have to win the Big West tournament to earn an NCAA bid. Even in UConn's own conference, South Florida is 11-5 and playing stingy defense, but the Bulls are no lock to end a 20-year NCAA tournament drought because of a lack of marquee wins.

All the criticism of those teams is certainly all valid, yet it would be a shame to see a floundering, underachieving group like UConn hear its name called on Selection Sunday at one of the above teams' expense.

Even with four starters back from last year's national championship team and the addition of a future lottery pick in its frontcourt, UConn has been unable to generate good shots on offense or play consistent defense. Both their confidence and effort level has seemed to vary so widely that it's hard to know what team will show up from timeout to timeout, let alone game to game.

The way UConn has played during a tumultuous January and February, it's abundantly clear the Huskies should become the fifth defending national champ to miss the NCAA tournament since the field expanded to 64 in 1985. Now let's hope the selection committee doesn't prolong their suffering and instead does the humane thing by putting them out of their misery.

"future lottery pick in the frontcourt"

If Drummond really is as talented as we assumed, UConn wouldn't be as mediocre as it looks.

But then again, maybe coaching really does matter more than talent at the college level.

He's that talented physically, mentally it's a question mark. kids with his size and athleticism always get drafted in the lottery though....It's all about guard play in college so his talent level doesn't really matter. Uconn doesn't have a go to scorer or good perimeter shooting just too many holes

his game is so limited. I think he only scored on dunks last night. No shot whatsoever and is TERRIBLE from the free throw line. He wont be able to abuse smaller guys in the NBA like he does in college.

"mediocre" is being pretty liberal dont ya think

Lunardi would have them in if they lose the next three. Ridiculous. 2 lottery picks where one just dunks and the other walks after loose balls and is pasive . Talk about an underachieving team, they should be right next to syracuse at the top of the big east with that talent.

They said VCU didn't belong there last year and look what happened!?! Why not give these teams with 20 plus wins from other conferences a chance? In my opinion Drexel, VCU, and George Mason should get a bid over U CONN. It is easy to say that a school does not have a notable win when you are always sucking up and putting the BE, ACC, Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, PAC on a pedestal. If this is the case why are these "no-name" schools coming up with the big wins every NCAA tournament. Don't believe me....just ask Syracuse, UCLA, Wisconsin, Kansas, or Texas....just to name a few who have been beaten in the first or second round....time to give the "little guys" their chance.

Except......VCU (and UAB) didn't deserve to be in there, at least over a few other teams that had better resumes.

Every year I lobby for as many Big East teams to make the tournament as possible, but even I can't make a case for UConn this year. Hopefully for their sake they win the BE tournament, because that is the only logical way they can get in the field of 68.

What do you mean? They play in the Big East. Doesn't every team from that conference get an automatic spot no matter what the record?

Big East = conference that argues quantity equals quality.

This is the funniest article I have read in some time. National champs to national chumps. Poor poor poor UCONN.

Thank you Dagger for a voice of reason in the media...

Now if you can kindly jump on those fools like Hugenin who continue to not only project all these undeserving Big 6 teams in, but add to the insult by projecting hem with high seeds too i'd appreciate it...

Four returning starters says it all - this team was only good because of the one non-returning starter. The media voters clearly had not been paying attention or else UConn wouldn't have been ranked in the preseason. But to keep trying to prop this team up even now after they've collapsed and proven me right is just a mockery of the sport.

The CAA is annually underrated. 3-4 teams from that conference should be locks most of the time.

UConn won the national title last year due in large part to attrition, instead of actually being a dominate, great team. Good teams kept losing until there was no one left in front of them but Butler, who advanced in large part, the same way. Which led to that terrible NC game. UConn lost its best player, from a team that wasn't great to begin with. The fact that they were expected to be a NC contender this year was a gross miscalculation considering, talent-wise, they're not as good as they look on paper.

They are not as talented as everyone thinks. Looks to me like a couple of these highly touted recruits are busts.
    • TexasHorn  •  Houston, Texas  •  2 months ago
No. They have lost way too many games to weak teams and will lose a couple more shortly. NIT is where they belong.

Give UConn's spot to someone more deserving. 'Nuff said.

I live in CT, have been a UCONN fan since before Calhoun arrived, this team sucks. No heart. UCONN has always had an emotional leader, but not this year. Team has no heart, but it does have a lot of talent. It is sad for UCONN fans to have to endure a team on life support.

Please...let the legacy go. They don't deserve to be in the tournament. They won last years tournament, they play in the Big East, they're a good tournament team: All of this shouldn't be enough to vault them into the Dance. Let a Drexel in. LB St. Somebody else. Let's reward someone else for their efforts, and get away from rewarding teams for "who they were" or "who they could be".

If the beat Pitt and win two in the BE tournament, they're in. If not NIT

Just shows what happens when you get complacent sorry UConn.

Would be funny if UConn wins the Big East Tourney and ends up in the field of 68 anyway...just like last year...
