30 Seconds to Know: Why do horses wear blinkers?

Those plastic cups around the horses' eyes serve a very important purpose on race day

Ever wonder why race horses wear those vision-impairing plastic cups around their eyes when running on the track? NBCSN's horse racing analyst Randy Moss has the answer.

Some horses can be overly curious, claustrophobic or too social in the gates, and considering the animal's ability to see nearly 350 degrees in circumference, the distractions on a race track can completely dismantle a horse's psyche.

As such, jockeys employ "blinkers" to limit their horse's peripheral vision and keep it focused on the finish line.

Tune in to NBCSN Saturday, May 3 at 12 p.m. ET for all your pre-Kentucky Derby coverage, and watch the race itself on NBC at 4 p.m. ET.
