Three pitches into his 2014 Cactus League debut, right-hander Zack Greinke pulled up lame because of a strained right calf. He doesn't think it's a big deal, and he still plans on pitching in Australia when the Los Angeles Dodgers travel there late next month, but it still gives all concerned a moment of pause.
"Just the last two pitches I threw. ... I threw some pitches just to test it out. Hopefully it's minor," Greinke told reporters.
Greinke missed a few starts early in 2013 after getting into a fight with the San Diego Padres, but he finished with one of his best individual seasons ever, posting a 2.63 ERA with 148 strikeouts in 177 2/3 innings. He's entering the second year of a $159 million deal with the Dodgers that runs through 2018 (with a player buyout clause after 2015).
So he's a precious and expensive commodity, in addition to being a human being.
