Coin flip forces unlucky top-seeded Georgia football team into ‘$20,000 road trip’
What's the most money you've ever won or lost as the result of a coin flip? For most people, it's probably just a few bucks. Incredibly, for two Georgia high schools, a single coin flip may have just been worth $20,000.
As reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kingsland (Ga.) Camden County High won a coin flip against Norcross (Ga.) High to determine which school would host a quarterfinal matchup between two of the state's top-ranked football teams. The coin flip was necessitated because both were the top seeds of their respective regions.
Yet the tickets and concessions aren't what's really driving the total cost of the coin flip, it's how much it will now cost Norcross to travel to Camden County for the game. Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the Journal-Constitution that the 300-mile trip for a late game would necessitate an overnight trip. Adding lodging to steep bus costs and food led to a total valuation far beyond what is traditionally associated with a high school road trip, regardless of distance or size.
"[An overnight trip] is an extremely expensive thing, when you have to travel five or six hours like we do, or like Norcross will have to this time," Camden County coach Jeff Herron told the Journal-Constitution. "It's a heavy financial burden on a school.
"When we travel to Atlanta, we stay at a very cheap place and eat probably four meals total. But we're still probably going to spend $20-to-$25,000 just on buses, food and lodging."
Luckily for Herron, he won't have to face that financial burden … at least this week. If Camden County pulls out a win in the eagerly anticipated faceoff, he might just find himself staring a $20K price tag in the face for the first weekend of December.
