Video: John Peterson records his first-ever hole-in-one at the U.S. Open
SAN FRANCISCO — Going into third round, John Peterson had already enjoyed memorable week at the U.S. Open. After qualifying for his first major via sectionals, the former NCAA champion played his way into the second-to-last group and a dream pairing with fellow LSU alum David Toms.
It seemed too good to be true. But the feel-good story got off to an inauspicious start on Saturday, as Peterson opened with four bogeys to fall of the pace. Nothing seemed to be going his way ... until he stepped onto the the tee at the par-3 13th.

Now let's set the scene here: According to Golfweek's Sean Martin, Peterson had never made a hole-in-one in his life before this week. Yep, one of the best golfers on the planet had never recorded a single ace. Ever.
Well, you know what happened next. Peterson watched as his ball tracked all 180 yards before disappearing into the cup for the only hole-in-one of the week. The shot was fantastic, and the celebration was the kind of thing you'd see from one of your buddies if he aced a hole during your Saturday afternoon round. It was pure, unadulterated joy.

It's tough to have a lot of fun at the U.S. Open because, most of the time, you're grinding for pars. So it was nice to see Peterson produce one of the best moments of the tournament. There's a good chance you'll be seeing it on U.S. Open highlight reels for years to come.
