For Ty Tryon, even double-digits over par isn't cause for despair
When you're getting your butt kicked, you've got two choices: run away, or stand and take it. Pebble Beach has had its way with Ty Tryon this week -- he was +7 coming into the weekend, hitting the cut line on the nose, and then on Saturday he added a fresh new +7 to his total. At +14 for the tournament heading into the final day, it's a pretty safe bet that Tryon won't be challenging for the Open title come Sunday afternoon.
That wasn't how it was supposed to shake out. If you believed the hype about Tryon, he was supposed to have won four or five of these majors by now. He was going to challenge Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson week in and week out. He was going to be golf's next great hope. He earned his way onto the PGA Tour when he was just 17, way back in 2002, but couldn't ever cut it there. He only made a single cut in 2002.
Still, time has a way of honing your edge. He's no longer a 17-year-old kid -- obviously -- but he's also ditched the 17-year-old's mindset. He's still got the talent to play at this level -- the dude's still years away from being 30, for heaven's sake. The U.S. Open is his first-ever major, and his first appearance at a PGA Tour event since 2003. Unbelievable ... and pretty impressive, too, that he's stuck with a faded dream for this long.
There are a lot of well-known players who are watching the end of the tournament from home who wouldn't mind being where he is right now. How's that for a change of circumstances?
