Jordan Spieth nearly closes Saturday at Kapalua with albatross
Jordan Spieth carries a five-shot lead into the final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. However, the lead was almost six, thanks to a near albatross on the final hole in Saturday's third round.
Spieth hit a 3-iron from 253 yards to the par-5 18th at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course. The ball landed short of the green with a fairly low draw, bounded forward onto the green and continued to move left all the way to the hole location, winding up about 10 feet past for eagle.
Of course, Spieth closed out the round with a bang, converting the eagle to shoot 8-under 65 on Saturday, hold a five-shot lead over Brooks Koepka, who himself was on fire with 10-under 63, and post a 24-under total heading into the final round.
Spieth is now on pace for the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record in relation to par. Ernie Els was 31 under par on this course in 2003, marking the only time in Tour history that a player has finished greater than 30 under par.
