Buy your tickets now: British Open returns to Liverpool in '14
Good news for Tiger Woods and anybody who saw the Beatles back when they were performing in The Cavern: the British Open is returning to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club for 2014.
Royal Liverpool has hosted 11 British Opens since 1897, but only one since 1967. That came in 2006, and Woods won the event, joining luminaries such as Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen as course champions. Jones' win was part of his 1930 Grand Slam. Like most British Open courses, shotmaking is key; Woods apparently only used his driver once during his entire 2006 run. As you can see above, there were quite a few people in attendance -- 230,000 people watched Tiger's win.
Later this year, the British will be at St. Andrews, to be followed by Royal St. George's, Royal Lytham and Muirfield prior to Royal Liverpool. For you Woods fans, he's won twice at St. Andrews but has no wins at the other courses. So if he's still hunting Nicklaus's record in four years -- a not-inconceivable possibility -- Royal Liverpool will provide his most friendly ground after this year.
