Red Sox offer Edwin Jackson one-year deal

The word was last week that the Boston Red Sox preferred to sign free-agent hurler Roy Oswalt to a deal. Failing that, they would try to trade with the Chicago White Sox for Gavin Floyd. And if that couldn't happen, the Sox would make an offer to Edwin Jackson.

If that's true, then the Sox are now on the third rung of their plan. The Boston Globe reports that the Sox have made a one-year offer to Jackson that is worth between $5 million and $6 million.

The Globe notes that Jackson is believed to have two multiyear offers on the table as well with one of them thought to be from the Baltimore Orioles. However, Jackson, who won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals last year after putting in a half season of work, wants to join a contender.

The 28-year-old went 12-9 with a 3.79 ERA for the Cards and Chicago White Sox last year.
