Aaron Hicks' 'peeing like crazy' plan not enough to get him back in Yankees lineup

New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks‘ pee-until-he plays plan didn’t work out like he thought it would.

Hicks was not in the starting lineup ahead of Monday night’s American League Division Series Game 3 against the Boston Red Sox, a move manager Aaron Boone said in the New York Daily News was a hard, but safe decision.

“Hicks is good. It was a much harder decision today,” Boone said. “He fought me today. Frankly, he looked considerably better, when he went through stuff outside.”

Boone said he felt the combination of Hicks’ injury, his position’s reliance on his legs, and having Brett Gardner as an option made putting Hicks on the bench the best thing to do.

The center fielder left Game 1 on Friday night with what he described as cramp in his hamstring and did not play in Game 2 on Saturday.

The plan to get him ready for Game 3 was hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. And it left Hicks “peeing like crazy” as he said in his Sunday press conference.

“We have been doing a lot of things. We have been trying to get me hydrated. So every single day I’ve been peeing like crazy, being hydrated,” Hicks said. “I am kind of testing it out, see how it feels.”

By Monday, Hicks and the staff said his leg was improving. but it was not enough to start. Boone did not rule out Hicks coming in off the bench in a pinch-hitting role though.

The Red Sox and the Yankees are tied at 1-1 before Monday’s ALCS Game 3.
