Zach Ertz says Bills tried to trade for him in 2021, Eagles nixed it
Had things gone according to plan, the Buffalo Bills would have had Zach Ertz on their roster in 2021… and potentially still today.
Instead, he was eventually shipped off to the Arizona Cardinals.
Ertz accepted the 20th annual Call to Courage Award in Buffalo over the weekend. There, he made a revelation: Ertz was nearly traded to the Bills, but ended up not heading to Buffalo because someone in the Philadelphia Eagles’ front office nixed the deal.
Previously a member of the Eagles, Ertz name had long been tossed in trade rumors in 2021.
“There were a couple teams extremely interested, Buffalo being one of them,” Ertz said via the Buffalo News. “It was almost a done deal, but it just didn’t get over the finish line.”
Per the report, Ertz would not who was the member of the Eagles that was against the Bills deal. Since 2019, Howie Roseman has been the general manager in Philly, so there’s a chance he was that person.
Regardless, as the story goes, there was no Ertz to Buffalo. He went to Arizona and went on to sign a three-year extension with the Cards.
Ertz to the Bills was a long-standing rumor prior to his departure to the Cardinals. Evidently, Ertz decided to reveal there was some truth to that idea.
While it never happened, the Bills will hope they’ve officially shored up their tight end position in the past couple of weeks. After signing Dawson Knox to an extension previously, the team just used a first-round pick on tight end Dalton Kincaid at the 2023 NFL draft.
