New York Mets promote Brandon Sproat to Binghamton Rumble Ponies

A Pace baseball alum is moving up in the minor leagues.

Brandon Sproat, who played for the Patriots and graduated in 2019, was promoted to the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies (New York) on Sunday, according to SNY's Joe DeMayo.

"(Sproat) has the unteachable trait of being able to touch 100 mph while sitting 94-97," DeMayo said in a February article, noting the Mets' Top 30 prospects for 2024. Sproat slotted in at No. 12, and is estimated to hit the show in 2025. "His changeup is his best secondary pitch. He also has a slider that flashes plus and a fringy curveball. The Mets will have to determine a preferred fastball type as his primary pitch, as it does not have ideal shape to it. If they can get there and refine his breaking balls, it’s a mid-rotation upside. If not, the bullpen could be his home."

Sproat played in six games with High-A Brooklyn after being drafted by the New York Mets with the 56th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. It was the second time Sproat was drafted by the Mets, who took him with the 90th pick in 2022, but Sproat opted to return to the University of Florida for his senior year.

In those six games, Sproat posted a 2-1 record with 25 1/3 innings pitched. He had a 1.07 earned-runs against average with 33 strikeouts.

Sproat is a two-time PNJ All-Area First Team selection from his days at Pace, and was an All-State team selection his senior season. In 2019, Sproat went 5-2 with a 1.53 ERA and 53 strikeouts. That was preceded by a 10-4 record with a 1.78 ERA during his junior season, when he led the Patriots to the Class 7A State Championship game.

Sproat played college baseball at Florida where he had a combined 19-8 record in 56 appearances over the course of four seasons. He struck out 242 batters in 223 2/3 innings. He also saw action in the postseason for Florida last year, including in the College World Series against both Virginia and Louisiana State.
