Yankees' Sanchez starting rehab stint Sunday, may return by Friday

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will begin a rehab assignment with Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday and could return Friday after the All-Star break, manager Aaron Boone said Saturday.

Sanchez was hurt on June 24 trying to beat out the throw to first on a double-play grounder. He landed on the 10-day disabled list on June 25 and was given a three-to-four week timetable to return.

Boone told reporters the plan is to have Sanchez start the team's first game after the All-Star break -- Friday versus the New York Mets -- barring any setbacks. The Yankees' last game before the break is Sunday.

Sanchez, 25, is hitting just .190 this season but has 14 home runs and 41 RBIs in 63 games. He batted .278 with 33 homers and 90 RBIs in his first full season in the majors last year, earning an All-Star appearance.

Austin Romine had two homers in a three-game span last week, but he has otherwise gone 5-for-34 (.147) with 13 strikeouts since taking over for Sanchez as the primary catcher.
