Yankees activate rookie IF Torres from disabled list

New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres was activated from the 10-day disabled list and rejoined the team for Wednesday's game against Tampa Bay.

Torres was placed on the disabled list on July 4 with a right hip strain. The rookie was selected to the American League All-Star team but was sidelined for the game.

The Yankees also called up right-handed pitcher Luis Cessa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start against the Rays, and optioned infielder Tyler Wade to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Torres, 21, is hitting .294 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs since the Yankees brought him to the big leagues on April 22. He's played in 63 games, and in the 15 games he missed while on the DL, the Yankees have gone 8-7.

He is among the favorites to capture the AL Rookie of the Year award.
