Wrestlers compete in sectionals

Jan. 30—Logansport had a third-place finish as a team and had two individual champions at Saturday's Twin Lakes wrestling sectional.

Isaiah Guajardo (150-pound weight class) and Oneil Reyes (215) won individual sectional titles for the Berries.

Guajardo (19-9) knocked off Pioneer's Brandon Sterrett (20-7) by fall in a semifinal match and defeated Rensselaer's Cayden Webb (35-8) by 12-10 decision in the championship match.

Reyes (15-11) pinned Tri-County's Jonathan Pearson (26-5) in the first period in his championship match.

The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to Saturday's Logansport Regional.

The Berries had a total of nine wrestlers advance along with Guajardo and Reyes.

Sergio Lorenzo finished runner-up for the Berries at 285. Lorenzo (18-3) lost by 4-3 decision to Benton Central's Jackson Bunch (25-10) in the title bout.

Olivia Gibson (113), Cyrus Villa (157) and Levi Sutton (165) each placed third for Logansport. Daniel Milburn (126), Ayden Salisbury (132) and Quintin McLeod (175) each placed fourth to advance.

Pioneer had three wrestlers qualify for the regional. Eli Guffey advanced with a third-place finish at 144. Brandon Sterrett (157) and Colton Baker (215) each placed fourth to advance.

Hoosier Conference champion Rensselaer won the sectional team title with 247.5 points. It was the seventh consecutive sectional title for the Bombers.

Rensselaer was followed by West Central (177), Logansport (163), Benton Central (159.5), North White (129), Tri-County (106.5), Twin Lakes (93.5), Frontier (76) and Pioneer (72.5).

PERU SECTIONAL

Lewis Cass had four regional qualifiers. The wrestlers will compete at Saturday's Peru Regional.

Eli Bowyer (132) and Nick Park (190) each placed third for the Kings. Elliott Grist (120) and Eli Martin (215) each placed fourth.

North Miami won the sectional team title with 204 points. It was the Warriors' first sectional title in wrestling since 1979 and second all-time.

North Miami was followed by Maconaquah (180), Manchester (141), Peru (141), Huntington North (124.5), Tippecanoe Valley (110), Northfield (106), Cass (95), Wabash (68) and Southwood (42).

PLYMOUTH SECTIONAL

Rochester won the team title with 256.5 points. It was a fourth consecutive sectional title for the Zebras.

Rochester was followed by Plymouth (238.5), Warsaw (205), Winamac (166.5), Triton (104), Bremen (81), Culver Academies (75), North Judson (66), Caston (58) and Culver (6).

Rochester had six individual sectional champions, including Layne Horn (38-0) at 126, Brant Beck (37-0) at 165, Declan Gard (32-3) at 175, Colin Weiand (32-6) at 190, Alex Deming (38-0) at 215 and Brady Beck (37-0) at 285.

Winamac had 10 wrestlers advance. Willis Dennis (138) and Talen Garner (175) each placed second. DJ Depke (157) and Tearson Wolford (165) placed third. Rian Shell (126), Asher Jones (132), Austin Attinger (144), Ryan Bedwell (150), Cooper Kopka (190) and Eli Matthews (285) placed fourth.

Caston had two wrestlers move on, as Jackson Robbins (106) and Pete DuVall (190) each placed third.

The wrestlers at the Plymouth Sectional advanced to Saturday's Penn Regional.
