The Arizona Cardinals held their first training camp practice of the season in pads as head coach Jonathan Gannon said the team would "cut it loose."

There were big hits, blocks, pads cracking and at least one minor scuffle. Veteran left tackle DJ Humphries said it was nice to run into some people, with bigger targets to grab.

"Honestly I was trying not to like, die. To just keep my technique tight," Humphries said. "I don't even know where the ball was going. All I know is I was making all my blocks, I was in position and everything."

Humphries said he was hyped up to hit someone and felt like he's in good shape. Just as team drills were to start Tuesday, an excited Budda Baker jumped into him to get Humphries even more worked up prior to the start of collisions at the line of scrimmage.

Wide receiver Hollywood Brown and tight end Trey McBride were limited Tuesday. Head coach Jonathan Gannon labeled their injuries as "a couple of nicks, bumps and bruises."

As for the scuffling, Gannon made clear there are consequences for fighting. He's already sent two players to the locker room for that in training camp.

"We educate our players on what's expected on a daily basis," Gannon said.

General Manager Monti Ossenfort said with the first day in pads, it's time to get a true look at the competition for roster spots.

"Now is the first time to get everybody out on the field and real football and really let the competition throughout the roster begin," Ossenfort said. "So we're excited, we're off to a good start, we've got a long way to go. And we're just gonna keep chipping away day by day here, and we'll see how it shakes out."
