World No.1 Iga Swiatek stunned by Elina Svitolina in Wimbledon quarterfinals

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was ousted in the Wimbledon quarterfinals by unseeded Elina Svitolina, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2.

The 28-year-old Svitolina is now in her second career semifinal at Wimbledon, less than nine months after giving birth to a baby girl, with her husband, fellow tennis player Gael Monfils, after returning to the WTA tour in April.

She completed the nearly three-hour match and a dominant third set when, on match point, Swiatek made one of 41 unforced errors, hitting the ball into the net during a short rally.

"First of all I’m going to have a beer, probably," Svitolina said after the match. "At the beginning of the tournament if someone would tell me that I will be in the semifinal and beating world No. 1, I would just say that they’re crazy."

Svitolina, who entered the tournament as a wild card, will now take on Marketa Vondrousova, who upset No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in her third career Grand Slam semifinal.

Swiatek got to the fourth round after surviving two match points against Belinda Bencic, and found herself down one set, but stormed a 3-1 lead in the second set before Svitolina came back to force a tiebreak.

With her victory, Svitolina became the third player in the Open Era to beat four former women’s singles Grand Slam champions in a single major tournament (Venus Williams in the first round, Sofia Kenin in the third, Victoria Azarenka in the fourth and Swiatek in the quarterfinals), joining Serena Williams at the U.S. Open in 1999 and Justin Henin at the 2005 French Open. Williams and Henin went on to win those tournaments.
