Winter track: Highlights from the Group 1 and 4 sectionals

Hasbrouck Heights and Ridgewood have been the most prolific winning teams in both boys and girls competitions since the North 1 state sectionals began in winter track in 2008. The Aviators extended their group 1 boys title total to eight (of the 16 meets) and the girls won their fourth (and third straight) Saturday morning at the Bubble at Bennett Center in Toms River.

Ridgewood's boys took their third straight (and ninth overall) in group 4 during the same session while the Ridgewood girls earned their sixth straight (and 10th overall) title.

Meanwhile, the Becton boys, which only revived its winter team last year after a 19 year absence, became the first North Jersey boys team to win a North 2 sectional title, joining the 2018 Lyndhurst group 1 girls, as titlists, romping to victory in the group 1 meet later Saturday, also at the Bubble.

Here's a closer look at the Highlights of the six meets involving North Jersey teams last weekend:

Boys

North 2, Group 1: Becton makes history by winning title

Before 2023, the last time a Becton boy had even scored a point in an NJSIAA winter track meet was in 2003 when Matt Magnifico finished fourth in the group 1 state 3,200 meter championship. That was in the days when the state group meet was an open entry event with the sectionals still five years away from creation. Of course for most of the ensuing years before the Wildcats scored eight points and finished eighth in the 2023 North 2 group 1 meet there was no winter track program at the regional school.

Saturday afternoon, Becton scored in nine of the ten events, winning the day's final event, the 4-x-400 relay and never trailed, becoming North Jersey's first boys North 2 champions with an easy 76-46 win over Verona.

"We're so excited about it,'' said boys head coach Quinn Geraghty, who came to Becton in the spring of 2022 and revived the winter program last winter. "(girls head coach) Dave Dorsey and I put all our energy and enthusiasm for the sport into recruiting as many numbers as we could and once we got them there, our job was to get them buy in to what we were doing.''

Last year's winter team got fourths from high jumper Jaydon Gilkes and its 4-x-400 relay team that didn't break 3:50. This year's squad got scoring from nine different individuals and the 4-x-400 team of Gustavo Costa, Nathan Bello, Yannick Fall and Steven Longo ran more than seconds faster to seal the title with a 15 meter victory.

"Our message never wavered from the first day of practice until now, that we thought we could compete for the sectional title this year,'' said Geraghty. "We told them before the meet that things were looking pretty good for us and then after the first event, (when Costa and Longo went 2-3 in the 400) you could see the relief and the belief.''

Becton grabbed the lead early and kept building on it. Max Thorn was fourth in the 1,600 and the Wildcats had the number two qualifier in the 55 hurdles. Longo was third in the 800, and the Wildcats took 2-4 in the pole vault behind Matt Forbes and Jakub Slezak and went 2-4-5 in the shot with Jayiem Gilkes, Chris Zawadzki and Brenon Osorio. With 50 points through the first five events, Becton shook off the false start of its hurdle finalist and finished the job with Costa grabbing third in the 55, Thorn fifth in 3,200 , Jaydon Gilkes' second in the high jump (behind a state leading 6-7 performance by Weehawken's Jordan Russell) and finally the relay win.

"They've worked so hard to get a taste of this success and while it probably came quicker than we expected, it's something to set a foundation on,'' said Geraghty.

North 1, Group 4: Distance runners and pole vaulters key to Ridgewood's third straight win

Ridgewood coach Josh Saladino had a simple plan for retaining the sectional title: "Go 1-2-3 in the 3,200, get 30 points in the other two distance events, and win the pole vault.'' That would give the Maroons 64 points, probably just enough to hold off Essex County champ Livingston and Morris champ Morristown.

"We have a national quality superstar in Luke Pash, a cross-country team that swept the sectionals and took third in the state and we've won the pole vault for most of the past seven or eight years,'' said Saladino. "Those kids had to come through for us to have a chance to win.''

Plan executed.

Pash won the 1,600 and 3,200 easily, nearly stole the 800 from an unseeded heat, Ray Stellmach, after an opening height scare, became Ridgewood's fourth straight winter vault champ and the rest of the top-notch Ridgewood distance squad did its job for a 64-58-55 1/2 win over Livingston and Morristown.

"We knew we had to do the work and not get too stressed out and we could get it done,'' said Pash.

But first Pash had to rebuild his own confidence.

He made two attempts to qualify for the high school mile at the Millrose Games, one coming up short because of a tactical mistake and the second a flat-out subpar effort.

"That one was a blow to my confidence (ninth at the Armory Officials Hall of Fame meet on Jan. 20), and I knew I had to get back into the right mindset,'' said Pash, who did so in a strong triple two days later at the Bergen County Relays.

Saturday, Pash and teammate DJ Murphy went 1-2 in the 1,600 and Pash, running a personal best open 800 in 1:59.58 from the unseeded heat went 2-5 with Jack McKenna running in the seeded heat. Morristown opened a huge lead before the pole vault but former wrestlers Ray Stellmach and Marcus Hochegger went 1-5 in the event to keep Ridgewood within 14 1/2 points of Morristown before the 3,200 and 4-x-400 relay, the last two events of the meet.

Stellmach, the favorite, missed his first jump at 10-6 before clearing the height and then clinched the 10 points for first when he cleared 11-6 after passing at 11 feet.

"I cleared my head after the first and focused on my job,'' said the junior, who has a personal best of 12-6. "My team was counting on me and my cousins from Toms River were there to see me. I wanted to do well for all of them.''

"I started vaulting last spring and one of my wrestling teammates persuaded me to do track and vault,'' he continued. "I really liked it so I stuck with it.''

Then it was the distance team's turn again. Only Clifton's Lamarr Olive was able to stay close to Pash, Murphy and senior Chris Brady in the second half of the race, but despite Olive's personal best, the trio broke the race open, with Pash looking back several times in the final lap and after he finished the race to check their progress.

Ridgewood led by 9 1/2 points going into the relay over Morristown, the only team that could catch it, so Pash handled anchor chores on the 4-x-400 just in case another point was needed.

"I wasnn't not going to run it.''

It turned to be unnecessary as East Orange Campus led wire-to-wire and Morristown dropped to sixth in the race and 2 1/2 points behind runner-up Livingston.

Passaic Tech's Raynier Galvez retained his hold as the state's top ranked 800 runner, easily winning in 1:56.84 on the flat track at the Bubble, just off the 1:56.44 he ran at Ocean Breeze's faster track at the Big North Liberty meet three weeks ago.

"I've been of focusing on my first lap and in trying to keep my 200 times consistent,'' said Galvez, who finished fourth in last spring's SMOC and ran an outdoor best of 1:52.78. "My goal this season has been to run in the 1:56s consistently and then try and win the State Meet of Champions.''

North 1, Group 1: Morrow's unprecedented triple leads Aviators to victory

In 15 previous editions of the North 1 sectionals, no boy in any group had ever won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 in the same meet. But Hasbrouck Heights junior Aidan Morrow became the first in a dazzling performance that ultimately carried the Aviators to a narrow 54-51 win over Glen Rock with Pequannock third with 43 points.

"Aidan was unbelievable today, just like he was at the NJIC meet last week,'' said Hasbrouck Heights coach Rob Brady. "It's first time I can remember when we had no boys place in the shot with our two best kids still recovering from football injuries and Aidan had to be ready to run everything for us to have a chance.''

And Morrow relished the opportunity.

"The meet last week prepared me for this a lot more than I thought it would,'' said Morrow. "I've learned a lot about my body and how to take it easy when I needed to.''

"After the race I did longer cool-down jogs and more stretching to get the lactic acid out, and drank a lot of Powerade and some no sugar energy packets,'' he said.

He ran with and then away from cross-country rival Max Kahn of Mountain Lakes in the 1,600, winning by 25 meters in 4:34.83, then controlled the 800 race from start to finish to out run Kinnelon's Will Portman by 10 meters in 2:05.56 and defeated Ben Habler of Glen Rock by 25 meters in 9:54.18 in the 3,200 to open a 10 point lead for the Aviators going into the 4-x-400 relay.

The Aviators also got a win from soph Michael Napolitano in the 55, a fourth from Aidan Vidal in the 55 hurdles, a sixth from Ryan Ober in the 800 and a second by Michael Murillo in the high jump.

One point in the relay would clinch the title and Morrow volunteered to run that too, but Brady thought his regular 4-x-400 could do the job.

They did, finishing sixth and Pequannock defeated Glen Rock to make the final margin three points.

Girls

North 1, Group 4: Sheridan's great race propels Ridgewood win

Avery Sheridan has been an important part of the Ridgewood girls' amazing sectional run over the past six years. The Maroons have won the last 18 combined cross-country, winter track and spring track sectional titles including eight since Sheridan became part of the cross-country varsity in the fall of 2022.

But never has Sheridan had the impact that she had in a remarkable 1,600 meter race that highlighted the latest Maroon sectional triumph.

Morristown's Ester Kirk and Avery McAdams of Montclair set a fast early pace with Sheridan lurking near the middle of the pack for the first couple of laps, moving up slowly as each of the eight 200 meter laps ticked by.

The State Sectional Cross-Country championships are held in Woodland Park, NJ on Saturday October 29, 2022. Avery Sheridan Ridgewood High School comes in fifth in the group four girls race.
The State Sectional Cross-Country championships are held in Woodland Park, NJ on Saturday October 29, 2022. Avery Sheridan Ridgewood High School comes in fifth in the group four girls race.

"I could tell they were dying and I just knew I was going to win,'' said Sheridan, who was still bubbling with joy hours after the race. "With 150 to go I made my move and I got the lead.''

McAdams had faded to third but Kirk wasn't giving up and the two runners hurled themselves across the finish line, both having given their all.

Moments later, the results became official. Sheridan had won by .02 second in a huge PR of 5:15.08. With Ayla Cooke's fifth place, the Maroons were off too a strong start.

"It was a fun race,'' said Sheridan, who came back later in the meet and took third in the 800, combining with Peyton Wennersten (fifth) for eight points to keep Ridgewood close before Cellina Rabolli, Eilat Kissil and Cooke swept the 3,200 to secure the victory. "I'm a really competitive person which comes from growing up with two older brothers. It feels good to help my team win championships.''

The formula for Ridgewood's sixth straight girls win was similar to that for the boys: distance races and pole vault. And the 56 points in those events were enough to defeat Morristown, which scored 54, mostly by star Aaliyah Murphy.

Saladino knew his girls had a larger margin for error than the boys and he was quick to praise 400 runners Kennedy Lubkemann and Payton Wennersten for their 3-5 finish in the meet's first event which preceded Sheridan's amazing effort. They were also part of the second place 4-x-400 which ran the

"Those first two events set the tone for the rest of the meet,'' said Saladino.

Clifton's Deborah Amoh is someone you'd want on your team. She's devoted, works hard and will do any event from the sprints to the hurdles to the jumps. She is often in or near the points and while she rarely wins an event, she's always in the mix.

Saturday, Amoh cleared a personal best five feet on her first attempt to win the sectional high jump title, her first major title above the league level.

"It means a lot,'' said Amoh, who scored Clifton's only points in the meet. "I put in a lot of work and it shows that diligence and dedication pays off. I haven't cleared 4-10 much recently and to set a PR and win a sectional title leaves me pretty excited.''

North 1, Group 1: Injury scare can't stop Samperi and Heights

Warming up for the high jump, an event in which she was one of the favorites, Lexi Samperi of Hasbrouck Heights slid on some sand on the floor at the Bubble and rolled her ankle. She withdrew without taking a jump and spent the next half hour icing and taping the ankle in hopes she could compete in the 55 hurdles and 55 dash, two other events in which she was in contention.

"I just wanted to make the state groups in something,'' said Samperi, one of the state's best long jumpers, an event that isn't part of the regular state program.

The prelims of the hurdles came and Samperi carefully navigated the five barriers, qualifying for the final with a time much slower than her usual performance.

"I got through it but I knew I had to attack the hurdles in the final to have any chance,'' said Samperi. "But because I got through the trials it gave me confidence for the finals."

Samperi lost the final to New Milford's Fibianna Ajetunmobi by .01 second, but her confidence grew heading into the dash, where she unleashed a personal best to win handily.

"Every race I had more confidence and by the time I reached the dash final, I was more rlaxed that I usually am and I was able to have a great performance.''

Heights coach Rob Brady was also able to relax, although even had Samperi not been able to compete at all, the Aviators would have easily retained their title.

"The girls just made me nervous after Lexi got hurt, but they all performed as they always do,'' said Brady after Heights scored in every event and added a shot put win by senior Elliot Eddy and a 4-x-400 relay gold to cap an 81-34 win over Wallkill Valley. "Lexi kept her focus after her injury and so did the rest of the girls.''

North 2, Group 1: Castillo and Tampadong are individual standouts

Ridgefield and Becton finished well behind team winner Verona, but the two North Jersey schools provided the top individual performances in the meet.

Ridgefield senior Kylie Castillo repeated her comfortable title wins in both the 55 and 400 and hopes to contend for both group titles in two weeks. Becton junior Mika Tampadong scored a personal best in her 1,600 win and won the 3,200 by nearly half a lap. She also took second in the 800.
