Wilmington high school sports top performers: First week of spring sports wraps up

Spring sports are officially back, and Wilmington-area athletes are already putting on a show.

While the high school basketball postseason may have just started, the first regular-season competitions of the 2024 spring sports season kicked off Monday.

From baseball to lacrosse, here are the best performances from around the Wilmington area for the final week of February.

Friday

Boys basketball

Nolan Billings, Jr., New Hanover: Billings scored 18 points to help the Wildcats defeat Knightdale 57-44 in the second round of the NCHSAA 4A East playoffs.

Rodmik Allen, Jr., New Hanover: Allen scored 16 in the win.

Myron McKoy, Sr., Trask: McKoy led all scorers with 27 points as the Titans defeated Martin County 70-67 in the second round of the NCHSAA 2A East playoffs.

Sherrod Henderson, Jr., Trask: Henderson scored 19 points in the win.

Girls basketball

Avery Fitzgerald, Soph., Hoggard: The sophomore scored 14 points as Hoggard defeated Wakefield 56-45 in the second round of the girls NCHSAA 4A East playoffs.

Tristan Shivers, Soph., Hoggard: Shivers scored 13 points in the win.

Sarah Elgart, Sr., Hoggard: Elgart logged a double-double, scoring 12 points and snatching 13 rebounds.

Baseball

Ayden Gore, Sr., North Brunswick: Gore went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a triple, and a home run as the Scorpions defeated Wilmington Christian Academy 11-1.

Boys golf

William Davis, New Hanover: Davis tied for second as he shot 68 at the Madyson Scott Invitational at Pine Hollow Country Club in Clayton, NC.

Maddux Cook, Hoggard: Cook also hit 68 at the event, tying Davis for second place overall.

Thursday

Baseball

Josiah Gillespie, Sr., Hoggard: Gillespie's two RBIs helped Hoggard to a 10-0 win over Jacksonville.

Softball

Kina Davis, Jr., South Brunswick: Davis did it all against Dixon, striking out 11 in seven innings and going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run as South Brunswick defeated the Bulldogs 3-0.

Girls lacrosse

Lillian Austin, Sr., Topsail: Austin scored four goals and added an assist as the Pirates defeated Broughton 13-2.

Melina Toronto, Jr., Topsail: The junior scored four goals and dished out one assist in the win.

Wednesday

Girls soccer

Avery Fisher, Soph., Hoggard: Fisher led the Vikings to their first win of the season by scoring a hat trick as Hoggard defeated North Brunswick 9-0.

Carlie Moroz, Sr., Hoggard: Moroz provided three assists and one goal in the win.

Softball

Kina Davis, Jr., South Brunswick: Davis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run while also throwing 11 strikeouts in four innings.

Addison Woodruff, Jr., South Brunswick: Woodruff went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, two doubles and a triple.

Boys lacrosse

Zion Lee, Sr., Topsail: Lee scored three goals and dished out three assists as Topsail cruised past Jacksonville 16-1.

Kayden Robles, Jr., Topsail: The junior scored one goal and provided three assists in the win.

Carter Warlick, Sr., Laney: Warlick scored four goals and added an assist as Laney defeated New Bern 17-7.

Hutchins Melind, Jr., Laney: The junior scored three goals in the win.

Girls lacrosse

Halle Dickerson, Fr., Laney: Dickerson led the Bucs with five goals and an assist as Laney defeated New Bern 17-5.

KK Cronemiller, Sr., Laney: The senior scored three goals and added two assists in the win,

Ella Hawks, Sr., Laney: Hawks netted four goals in the win.

Morgan Hill, Jr., South Brunswick: Hill scored five goals as the Cougars defeated Myrtle Beach 13-3.

Tuesday

Baseball

Quinn Bentley, Jr., Ashley: Bentley went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double as Ashley cruised past Lumberton 12-1 on opening day.

Cole Barnes, Jr., Ashley: Banres threw 10 strikeouts in the win.

Luke Vargo, Sr., Hoggard: The senior went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Hoggard defeated West Carteret 13-3.

Nikita Sutherland, Sr., Hoggard: Sutherland went 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs in the win.

Caleb Robles, Sr., New Hanover: Robles went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double, and three runs scored as New Hanover defeated Jacksonville 12-2.

Camden Croom, Soph., New Hanover: The sophomore scored four runs in the win while being walked three times.

Softball

Gracie Mabrey, Sr., Hoggard: The senior went 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs and the Vikings’ first home run of 2024 as Hoggard sailed past Lumberton 11-2.

Macey Ciamillo, Jr., Hoggard: The junior threw eight strikeouts in the win.

Kennedy Sloan, Sr., Topsail: The Pirates pitcher threw nine strikeouts and allowed no runs as Topsail snuck past Richlands 2-0.

Lauren Hall, Soph., Trask: The sophomore went 2-for-4 with two doubles as the Titans defeated Harrells Christian Academy 6-0.

Girls soccer

Olivia Duleba, Jr., Laney: Duleba scored two goals and provided one assist as the Bucs defeated D.H. Conley 5-2.

Sadie Jones, Soph., West Brunswick: Jones scored her first hat trick of the season as the Trojans defeated St. Pauls 7-0.

Nayeli Sanchez, Fr., Trask: The freshman scored three goals in the Titans 5-2 win over Wilmington Christian.

Boys basketball

Joshua Helms, Sr., Laney: Helms helped the Bucs to a buzzer-beater 55-53 win over Pinecrest in the first round of the state playoffs by scoring a game-best 19 points.

Malakhi Daniels, Sr., North Brunswick: Daniels led all scorers with 28 points as the Scorpions defeated West Johnston 85-74.

Girls Basketball

Tristan Shivers, Soph., Hoggard: Shivers led the Vikings with 14 points as Hoggard defeated Apex 48-27 to advance to the second round of the state playoffs.

AK Chance, Soph., Hoggard: Chance scored 13 points in the win.

Brianna Stanley, Soph., New Hanover: Stanley led all scorers with 20 points as the Wildcats fell in overtime to Leesville Road.
