Class C

Semifinal

Leffell 47, Tuckahoe 35

WHITE PLAINS — With little more than a minute left in its boys Section 1 Class C semifinal game, Leffell was still hitting the floor for loose balls — Jasch Weiss doing  a Superman dive, despite the game being well in hand.

With an 11-point lead, he and his teammates could taste the upset.

And yet there was no let-up.

Not now, not from the opening tip, when Leffell came out playing like the regular season didn't matter.

Twice, Tuckahoe, the No. 2 seed in the Section 1 Class C boys basketball tournament, had beaten No. 3 Leffell, although the second time — a 25-point blowout last month — came with an asterisk, since the private Jewish school's seniors were away on a Holocaust-educational trip to Poland.

But Sunday at Westchester County Center, with both teams’ seasons on the line, it was all hand on deck.

And a combination of cold Tuckahoe shooting — including from the free-throw line, where it was an abysmal 9-for-22 — and a tenacious defense by the Lions, who, despite being out-sized, largely shut off the inside – helped lift Leffell to a 47-35 win.

The Lions, who trailed 21-17 at the half, outscored the Tigers 19-6 with six players putting the ball in during what proved to be a decisive third quarter.

Russell Wchsler’s steal and basket knotted the score at 21. Weiss’ two free throws put Leffell up 23-21 with 7:01 left in the third quarter and while certainly not apparent then, it was a lead the Lions would not relinquish.

Leffell hit from inside and out with Nate Mirvis draining a 3, Jake Horowitz cashing in on a great feed inside from Weiss and Wiess draining a late-preiod 3 that seemed like a fatal shot, putting the Lions up 36-27, which is how the period ended.

“They killed us in the paint when we had no seniors (playing),” said the junior Wechsler, who noted the Lions’ game plan was to play “intense defense,” denying Tuckahoe inside shots and keep its big men off the boards.

It was mission accomplished.

What it means

Tuckahoe finished the season 13-8.

Leffell, now also 13-8, will face No. 1 Haldane for the boys Class C championship March 3 at 7:15 p.m. at the County Center.

Leffell played Haldane, last year’s state runner-up, four weeks ago, falling 55-48.

— Nancy Haggerty

Player of the game

But Wechsler, who was all over the court, playing with quickness and unrelenting intensity, expects a win if his squad plays like it did against Tuckahoe.

Wechsler earned top player honors with multiple steals and a game-high 16 points.

Jack Bamford led Tuckahoe with 10 points.

Box score

Leffell: Wechsler 16 pts; Weiss 8 pts, Asher Friedland 8 pts; Horowitz 5 pts.

Tuckahoe: Bamford 10 pts; Connor Benke 8 pts; Rocco Briante 7 pts; Lucas Jolley 6 pts.

Quotable

In explaining his team’s ability to beat a team that it had lost to twice (the first time in January by six points), Wechsler pointed to his team’s cultural background.

“It’s really the Jewish community,” he said. “We fight to the end. We have heart. We fight.”

Class AAA

Quarterfinals

Mount Vernon 58, North Rockland 31

THIELLS – It was a lot easier to overlook Mount Vernon a few weeks ago.

A never-in-doubt win over the defending Section 1 champions will undoubtedly create genuine concern among the favorites. The Knights were humbled a number of times along the way, but they are heading for the County Center with plenty of adrenaline off a Class AAA quarterfinal triumph.

“We’re prepared for this,” said Tavien Tyler, who sparked this win.

The defense certainly met the program’s lofty standard against the Red Raiders, who managed just six points in the second quarter.

Mount Vernon took away time and space, then put bodies on bodies and cleaned up on the boards.

Tyler was close to automatic. It was an emotional day for the junior playmaker, who spent the morning with family at funeral services for his grandmother, Dorene Hadly, then somehow found the focus needed to connect six times from behind the arc in the opening half.

“It motivated me,” Tyler said. “My grandmother always wanted the best for me. She always talked about playing as hard as I can every game.”

At the break, Tyler had 22 points. The Knights headed for the locker room with a 35-16 cushion. It was exactly the kind of start a team without a lot of playoff experience needed. The offense momentarily lost traction after halftime, but the defense never let the Red Raiders get comfortable enough to rally.

Mount Vernon's Tavien Tyler (2) puts up a shot in the Class AAA quarterfinal boys basketball game against North Rockland at North Rockland High School on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024.

What it means

White Plains is next. The Tigers handed Mount Vernon an 80-66 loss in late January and are the No. 1 seed. It’s a source of motivation. The Knights have way more history in this building than any team in Section 1, but they are the underdog this season. It’s a fitting label. Mount Vernon appears to have embraced the fact that rival teams are favored and is playing defense like a determined spoiler.

Player of the game

Tyler spent the first three minutes working to get teammates established on the offensive end, then attacked when turnovers began to pile up.

Quotable

“We worked,” Knights coach Bob Cimmino said. “We did a good job, and I told the fellas our defense controlled the game. Tavien was on fire on such a difficult day, personally, with his grandmother being buried this morning. It was really tough seeing him so upset earlier and then he bounced right back. I think his grandmother was watching over him.”

“We start this season out slow,” Mount Vernon forward Nathaniel Edwards said. “We had team chemistry issues. As the season went on, we started to push each other in practice. We took some losses against teams like New Rochelle and Mamaroneck and we learned from that experience. I haven’t played in the County Center because I was injured last year so that’s a great feeling, but we have to stay humble.”

Class AA

Quarterfinals

No. 4 Suffern 46, No. 5 Somers 44

SUFFERN – The point of no return was coming up fast when Scott Wright called a quick timeout in the second quarter.

It’s not the first time Suffern needed a reset.

The Mounties took note of everything Wright said in the huddle Thursday, erased the early deficit with a memorable run before sweating out a 46-44 victory against Somers in a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal.

Next stop, the Westchester County Center.

“We talked about staying the course,” Suffern forward Jeph Joseph said. “We have the mindset that no team can play with us for 32 minutes. If we stay the course and play our Mountie defense we’ve been preaching all year, we’ll get it back.”

The Tuskers recovered following a cold start and were up 20-8 when Andrew Violante and Nate Cohen went back-to-back from 3 to open the second quarter and went .

Time out.

Jake Pampolina sparked the comeback from behind the arc and Jaiden Clement had Suffern up 24-22 in the final minute of the half. The run continued after the break. Pampolina capped the 26-4 run with a four-point play, giving the Mounties a 34-24 advantage.

Somers has been a hit-and-miss team all season and went four-plus minutes without a point to open the third quarter and five-plus minutes without a field goal to open the fourth quarter.

Somers was able to re-fire and made it a one-possession game the entire fourth quarter, but a late cold snap and three untimely turnovers did Somers in.

Suffern's Jake Polpolino (13) puts up a shot in the Class AA quarterfinal boys basketball game against Somers at Suffern High School on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024.
Suffern's Jake Polpolino (13) puts up a shot in the Class AA quarterfinal boys basketball game against Somers at Suffern High School on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024.

What it means

Suffern is heading to the Westchester County Center next week to face a more experienced team in Yorktown. A poor start in that moment could be fatal. The Huskers were in the semifinals a season ago and are coming in with a 13-game win streak. Yorktown is rarely uncomfortable and can win a game played in the 50s, 60s or 70s. The Mounties are in a good place defensively, but need to fine tune at the other end of the court.

Player of the game

Jake Pampolina wasn’t shy when the Mounties needed one timely bucket to reverse the momentum.

Quotable

“We just put our hearts out there,” Mounties forward Jeph Joseph said of the comeback. “We have a young group and people have no idea the work everyone has put in. We played in like four or five different leagues in the summer. I’ve been with some of these kids since kindergarten, so having the opportunity to go to the County Center is amazing.”

“We started out really hot and believed in it and lost our way a little when things went south,” Tuskers coach James Loughran said. “Earlier in the season, in situations like this one, they would turn on each other, but they have came full circle and they fought to stay in this game. It helps when you have so many seniors who are trying so hard to extend the season. It was a tough run for us because we couldn’t get anything to fall and it led to some defensive lapses.”

“We’ve done this before,” Suffern guard Jake Pampolina said. “We come back all the time. We really have to fix the cold starts, but we've done this so many times so we’re used to it. We turn it up on the defensive end. Coach tells us when it’s time and when we’re pressing, everyone is locked in.”

SECTION 1

Class A

Quarterfinals

No. 1 Pearl River 52, No. 8 Tappan Zee 35

PEARL RIVER – This was no ordinary win.

Delirious players don’t get swarmed by classmates unless the moment is worthy of a mob scene. Pearl River earned the homecourt celebration Wednesday, dethroning Tappan Zee in a well-executed Section 1 Class A quarterfinal.

“We’ve been waiting for this forever,” Pirates senior Aidan McCahey said. “When the seedings came out and I saw TZ-Pearl River on this court, I was locked in, I was ready. We had to flip the script. We came out with the win this time so it feels great.”

The Dutchmen sent Pearl River home in the quarterfinals a year ago then went on to win a state title.

Pirates coach Jerry Houston resisted the urge to make more than a few adjustments following a humbling loss at Tappan Zee three weeks ago.

From the start, Pearl River out-scrapped its longtime rival.

The Dutchmen had turnover issues the entire game and got the additional scoring punch needed via committee. Dagan McLaughlin dropped a pair of early 3s to spark the offense. Sean O’Brien and Ryan Houston contributed timely buckets and T.J. Lanese slammed the door.

Aidan McCahey has been the go-to for points all season. He was shut out for the first 12 minutes, but the Pirates had a 25-17 edge at the break.

The lead was 36-23 after three as Tappan Zee committed seven turnovers and made just two field goals in the quarter.

What it means

Pearl River is the No. 1 seed in Class A, but the Pirates did not get any breaks, landing on the same side of the bracket as Tappan Zee and Byram Hills. That’s a difficult path to a gold ball. Rye and Hen Hud are on the other side of the bracket. Pearl River beat the Bobcats 54-42 in January so they have a blueprint to go along with the adrenaline.

Player of the game

Given the gravity of the moment, Lanese had a career game.

Quotable

“The defense put so much focus on Aiden,” Lanese said. “He was able to throw us some good passes and we were able to score. It was awesome. We know if we’re scoring, it gets Aidan’s energy up. He kind of leads us in every way, on the defensive end, too, and we know he’ll get it going on the offensive end.”

“The County Center will be very packed, very loud,” McCahey said.

“It was good for us to get more than Aidan scoring,” Pearl River coach Jerry Houston said. “He didn’t have his typical night, but other guys were able to step up and make shots. That is something we struggled with in the beginning of the year. Aidan carried us because the other guys weren’t ready, but now they have experience and are feeling more comfortable.”

CHSAA AA ARCHDIOCESAN TOURNAMENT

Semifinals at Mount Saint Michael

No. 1 Stepinac 85, No. 4 Monsignor Scanlan 63

BRONX — At this point in the season, there is no path of least resistence.

Stepinac is dealing with a little extra physicality and listening to a little extra chatter after going 15-0 against CHSAA opponents during the regular season. The response against Monsignor Scanlan was for the most part calculated, but there was some emotion, too.

Instead of turning a cheek during the CHSAA Archdiocesan AA Tournament semifinal at Mount St. Michael., the No. 1 seed went next level with the defensive intensity and took over in the second half.

Scanlan was hitting contested shots early, playing with an edge and only trailing 40-37 at the break.

Boogie Fland punctuated a 10-2 run to close a hectic third quarter to give Stepinac a 57-45 lead going into the fourth. And three minutes later, Braylan Ritvo had the Crusaders sitting on a 69-51 cushion.

There will be some lingering bumps and bruises, though.

What it means

Stepinac captured the CHSAA Intersectional title a year ago, but did not win this championship. The goal is to go 2 for 2 this time around. The Crusaders will take on St. Raymond at 1 p.m. Saturday. And the Ravens need to be ready to defend the kick-out 3s that have fueled so many Stepinac runs. Those crowd silencers were a big part of the Stepinac attack against Scanlan.

Quotable

"Everyone is gunning for us now because we didn't lose a league game," Stepinac forward Braylan Ritvo said. "We just have to keep playing the way we've been playing and keep our composure because we've got everything to lose."

"We're big believers in it," Stepinac coach Pat Massaroni said of the dive-and-kick 3s that are such a lethal part of the offense now. "It's what the next level is about, making the right play. We've told Boogie and Danny, "If you get in that lane and draw a double-team, kick the ball out. If the defense hugs the corners, score.' And they make the right play about 99% of the time."

"I just go out there and play," Stepinac guard Boogie Fland said of the physical and verbal heat that come with the spotlight the McDonald's All-American currently occupies. "It's what comes with it. I've adapted. It's going to come every game and I just have to be ready."

Class AA

First round

Fox Lane 48, Clarkstown South 33

BEDFORD – The body language on the visitor’s bench told the tale.

Clarkstown South was desperately attempting to spark a fourth-quarter comeback, but no longer had the legs. Fox Lane left another opponent run down and worn out.

It’s what the Foxes do.

They scored timely baskets following a bumpy start, built a comfortable lead early in the second half and kept the season alive with a 48-33 win Friday in a Section 1 Class AA opening-round game.

Style points are overrated in the playoffs.

Neither side managed a field goal until Kevin New created space on the block six minutes in and got Fox Lane going. The score was knotted until the Foxes closed the half on an 8-1 run. Arthur Shevik dropped a 3 to carry the momentum over and Fox Lane built a 29-15 cushion two minutes into the third.

The Vikings were scrapping, too, but runs don’t last without buckets.

What it means

Fox Lane defended well and was able to outmuscle South in the paint. The rebounding was right where it needs to be in the playoffs. Against top-seeded Yorktown, the Foxes will need a little more finesse on the defensive end. Redemption could be part of the upcoming conversation. Fox Lane fell to the Huskers 51-28 back in December.

Player of the game

The Foxes leaned hard on Kevin New and he delivered.

“We came out here with a big chip on our shoulder and battled all the way through,” Fox Lane guard Kevin New said. “We are dogs. That’s all I have to say. We’re a roster full of dogs. Everyone just wants it.”

“It was just kind of (bad) timing,” Vikings coach Pat McGuinness said. “I give a lot of credit to them. They are as tough as they come. It was like looking in the mirror because they are very similar to us. We tried to up the tempo on them a little bit and it didn’t work out. They handled it well. We put a lot into that and were down and tired, so it was tough to get back into it.”

“Coach talked about him all week,” said Fox Lane forward James Minotti, who leaned into Vikings big man Luc Brogniart the entire game. “I knew I was going to shut down his left side. I was excited to help my team any way I could so I’m glad it went well tonight.”
