Where do Payton/Brees land in coach-quarterback combo rankings?

The New Orleans Saints best era has without a doubt been the run with Sean Payton and Drew Brees, which is going into its 10th season together (remember that Payton was suspended for all of 2012 for the Bountygate scandal.)

Though they haven’t been a consistent playoff team, they have qualified for the postseason five times, winning three NFC South titles and Super Bowl 44. There’s no questioning how great of a run these two have been on together, and it’s safe to assume Brees will be finishing his career with Payton by his side.

Steven Ruiz from USA Today posted his head-coach and quarterback power rankings. We all know who number one is, and it’s no shock that Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy are number two.

Payton and Brees took the third spot on the list. In all honesty, it’s hard to disagree with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy taking the top two spots. They’ve been far more consistent in their respective tenures together, while the Saints have gone through multiple stages of rebuilding with Payton and Brees.

Here’s what Ruiz had to say about placing the pair third:

“Like every great coach and quarterback combo in history, Payton and Brees have become synonymous with one another. This is a truly symbiotic relationship: I’m not so sure Payton is as successful as he’s been without Brees, and I’m not sure if Brees is the hall-of-famer he’s become without Payton.”

This is a nice placement for the two. Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson were fourth and Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger were fifth. There’s a lot to admire about Brees and Payton, as the two have worked hand-in-hand for years, and are the two main reasons this team was able to be dominant just a short time after Hurricane Katrina.

Now, Saints fans can only hope these two have one more run in a championship between them.
