Here is where Andy Reid ranks among Chiefs head coaches

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is entering his 10th season as head coach of the franchise. At the end of the year, he’ll become one of just three head coaches to have ever coached double-digit seasons with the franchise alongside Hank Stram and Marty Schottenheimer. Reid already has a strong case to be recognized as the greatest head coach in franchise history, but he’ll cement that case in the coming seasons.

Where exactly does Reid rank in franchise annals as a head coach, though? Here’s a quick look at where he currently stands among the 13 head coaches in Chiefs franchise history:

Years coached: 9

Ranking: Third

Only two coaches — Hank Stram (15) and Marty Schottenheimer (10) — have more years under their belt in Kansas City than Coach Reid. At the conclusion of the 2022 season, Reid will move into a tie for second place with Schottenheimer.

Games coached: 145

Rank: Third

Both Hank Stram (166) and Marty Schottenheimer (160) have Andy Reid beat here. If you include the 44 games that Stram coached before the merger, the top spot (210 games coached) looks quite unattainable. Reid should pass Schottenheimer for second place all-time with 162 regular-season games coached by the season’s end.

*If you include Hank Stram’s AFL coaching days before the NFL-AFL merger, he comes in at first place with 124 total regular-season wins. Reid will likely exceed that number if he coaches through the 2024 NFL season.

Reid currently ranks first in wins among post-merger head coaches for Kansas City. He just barely edges out Marty Schottenheimer (101) with two more regular-season wins.

Rank: Third (Tie)

If you coach more games, you’re going to lose more games. Of the 13 head coaches in Kansas City, Andy Reid is tied with Marv Levy, having lost the third-most games in franchise history.

Winning percentage: .710

Rank: First

Reid leads all Chiefs coaches in regular-season winning percentage by a good margin. Schottenheimer is the only other coach to come close (.634). If you included playoff games in these percentages, Reid would still lead all head coaches in franchise history (.695).

Playoff games coached: 16

Rank: First

Only Marty Schottenheimer comes close to Reid here with 10 playoff games coached from 1989-1998.

Playoff wins: 9

Rank: First

Reid has won more playoff games than any other coach in franchise history and by a pretty big margin too. Even if you include Hank Stram’s AFL days, he has only reached five playoff wins.

Rank: First (Tie)

Having coached the most playoff games also means you’ve had the most opportunities to lose them. Reid is tied with Schottenheimer for the most playoff losses in franchise history.

AFC West titles: 6

Rank: First

Besides Reid, Schottenheimer is the only coach in franchise history to win the AFC West in multiple seasons. The fact that the Chiefs have won it six times in a row under Reid isn’t just a historic achievement for the franchise, but it’s never been done before by any coach in the history of AFC West division.

Super Bowl wins: 1

Rank: First (Tie)

Hank Stram is the only other Chiefs head coach to have won a Super Bowl in Kansas City. Stram and Reid both had their teams play in two Super Bowls but came out with just one Lombardi Trophy in the end. Will Reid get a shot at earning another ring to edge out Stram?
