Westbrook Christian pitchers combine for 26 strikeouts to lead Gadsden area top performers

Baseball

Semifinal round

Westbrook Christian's Dylan Rainey struck out 13 batters, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in a 6-4 win.

Westbrook Christian's William Chadwick brought in three RBIs.

Westbrook Christian's Braden Kay had 13 strikeouts in a 3-0 win over Lauderdale County. He allowed only two hits and one walk.

Boys track and field

State meet

Gaston's Kodie Bogle broke the Class 2A state record with a throw of 184-feet, 1-inch, in the javelin to winning the state meet. He finished fifth in high jump.

Cherokee County's Alex Johnson won three states titles in the 100, 200 and 400-meters races.

Coosa Christian's LJ Mostella won two state titles in the 100 and 200.

Hokes Bluff's Conner Willingham finished second in the javelin, fourth in the discus and 12th in shot put.

Sardis's Seth Cooper, Jose Ponce and Gage Garner finished top-10 in the individual throwing events.

Southside's Evan Christopher finished third in the 3,200-meter and sixth in the 1,600-meter.

Westbrook Christian's Brodey Woods finished third in the javelin.

Sectional round

Boaz's Emma Jones shot an eight-over-80.

Cherokee County's Ellie Cothran shot a 2-under-70.

Southside's Mallory Brooks shot a one-over-73.

Hokes Bluff's Makayla Bearden shot an 88 in the Class 1A-3A sub-state match to help the Eagles advance to states.

Girls Track and Field

State meet

Cherokee County's Mary Hayes Johnson won two states in the 200 and 300 hurdles. She finished second in the 100-meter and 100 hurdles.

Fort Payne's Lydie Varnadore finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, fourth in the 300-hurdles and fourth in the high jump.

Fort Payne's Cooper Garrett won a state title in javelin.

Gadsden City's Nyla Franklin won the schools first state title with a win in the high jump.

Thursday, May 9

Glencoe's Cayse Willett brought in three RBIs and scored twice.

Glencoe's Abi Bunt scored twice.

Piedmont's Cayla Brothers brought in two RBIs in a 9-4 loss to Plainview.

Piedmont's Savannah Smith brought in three RBIs in a 8-6 win over Glencoe.

Plainview's Shianne Parker struck out nine batters in a 9-4 win over Piedmont.

Plainview's Hannah Regula brought in three RBIs.

Wednesday, May 8

Glencoe's Abi Bunt had three RBIs and scored twice in a 11-6 win over JB Pennington.

Glencoe's Emma Croy brought three RBIs and scored three times.

Hokes Bluff's Abby Payne had a triple as part of a three-hit day with two RBIs and four runs scored in a 15-5 win over Vinemont.

Hokes Bluff's Lacey Grace Hall hit a homerun with three RBIs and scored a run. She threw a complete game with five strikeouts.

Hokes Bluff's Abby Payne hit a homerun and a triple with two RBIs in an 8-5 loss to Piedmont.

Hokes Bluff's Makenna Bennich had two RBIs with a triple and two singles.

Piedmont's Cacey Brothers hit two RBIs in an 8-5 win over Hokes Bluff.

Piedmont's Jaycee Glover brought in two RBIs.

Piedmont's Savannah Smith threw a complete game, allowing five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Cherokee County's Raechel Russell brought in the game winning RBI in a 2-1 win over White Plains.

Cherokee County's Grayson Tucker brought in two RBIs in a 5-0 win over Cordova.

Cherokee County's Emma Hill brought in two RBIs in a 3-2 win over Madison County.
