Wellington, McPherson, Fort Scott and Bishop Miege reach semis of 4A Girls

Mar. 8—Wellington advances to semis in girls Class 4A Tournament

Surviving three scoring runs by the Andale Indians, the Wellington Crusaders pulled away for a 71-53 opening game win in Salina. The Crusaders won both meetings of the regular season versus Andale. Wellington led by 22 points with 2:18 to go in the fourth quarter.

Wellington's Valerie Norwood and Brittan Zeka, both juniors, and freshman Dru Zeka led the team with 14 points each. Sophomore Lyndi Barton added 12 for the winners.

Andale freshman Reagan Winter led the Lady Indians with 13 points and junior MADDIE Lies added 12.

Wellington led by 10 after one and by 11 at half time. Andale owned the third quarter, but Wellington came back with a strong fourth to pull away for the victory. Andale out rebounded the Lady Crusaders, but Wellington scored 36 points off Andale turnovers.

McPherson leads Ottawa 39-21 at the half of the second quarterfinal game

The number four seed McPherson Bullpups were just too much for the five seed Ottawa Cyclones Wednesday afternoon. The Bullpups won 66-44 and will play Wellington in the semis on Friday.

McPherson scored 21 first half points off turnovers and dominated in the paint and second chance points. Ottawa managed just 21 points in the first 16 minutes of the game.

The Lady Bullpups dynamic freshman Jaela Thompson scored 12 points in the first half and led the Bullpups to a 30-point difference after three quarters at 56 to 25. Karter Alvod had a game high 18 points for McPherson on seven of 10 shooting from the floor. McPherson played their bench for most of the fourth quarter.

Leah Dieterich led Ottawa with 16 points.

Fort Scott rallies to pull away from Clearwater

Trailing by two-points at the break, the number two-seed Fort Scott Lady Tigers used a strong third quarter propelled by three-point shooting to pull away from the athletic and tall Lady Indians of Clearwater to lead by 13 heading to the final eight minutes.

Fort Scott went on an extended run in the third quarter to outscore Clearwater 21-6 and then kept the pressure on for a 64-42 victory. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by senior Keegan Yarick with a game high 21 points and 14 rebounds. Three others were double points with Abbie Gorman having 16, Kylee Comstock 13 and Allie Bown 10. Fort Scott scored 38 points in the second half to Clearwater's 14.

Clearwater senior Elizabeth Tjaden finished with a team high 20 points.

Bishop Miege rolls over

Labette County

Using pressure defense and deadly three-point shooting, the defending Class 4A Champion Bishop Miege Stags rolled out to a 21-7 first quarter score in the final game Wednesday night in Salina.

Miege is under the direction of head coach Mike Allen in his first season guiding the three-seed Lady Stags. Allen inherited a roster full of All-State contenders as sophomore Mary Grant and junior Kirston Verhulst to a 39-14 half time lead. Grant had 12 points in the first half while Verhulst and sophomore point guard Faith McCallop added 11 first half points. Miege forced 15 first half turnovers that they converted into 11 points.

Verhulst drained a three at the third quarter buzzer to push the score to 55-23. Grant led all scorers with a game high 20 points while Verhulst had 18. McCallop finished with 15. Landry O'Brien had nine points for Labette County.
