Week 6 of the high school football season offers up a variety of storylines

Week 6 of the high school football season is here, here is a look at five things to watch.

Cathedral vs. Bowie: An interesting matchup

The matchup between the Fighting Irish and Bears should be one of the city's best matchups. Cathedral has won three straight and is 3-2 on the season. The last two wins have come under interim coach Hristo Gonzalez.

Bowie is 4-1 and has won four straight games since losing its season opener to one-loss Hanks.

Both teams feature talented offenses, the Fighting Irish are led by quarterback Jose Carlos Herrera and Bowie has running back Alan Mota. Both had big games for their respective teams last week.

Can Montwood keep momentum going?

The Rams have won two straight games to start District 1-6A and will be at Franklin, which is 2-1 in District 1-6A and which is facing a near must win if it wants to retain hopes of winning a district title.

The Rams are playing solid football right now, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Michael Southern has come a long way in his first season as a starter and the Rams have a solid group of wide receivers led by Diego Oxaca.

Hanks has a chance to make statement

The Knights are 4-1 to start the season and have playoff aspirations in District 1-5A Division I. Last year, the Knights missed the playoffs, but are hoping to be one of the four teams from the district to make the playoffs. They'll face a a big test Friday at Bel Air, which is 5-0 for the second straight season.

Hanks has been very good on offense, led by wide receiver Jude Blanco. The Knights will have to improve defensively in district play to make a play for a top two finish in a district that features Del Valle and Parkland in addition to Bel Air and Ysleta.

Del Valle RB is worth going to watch play

Junior Shelton Fuller III is certainly someone that El Paso high school football fans need to go see. The Division I prospect is getting better each week at running back and is one of the city's most explosive players as witnessed by his five rushing touchdowns last week against Chapin.

Ysleta's Martinez having great season

Ysleta junior Evan Martinez is an all-around standout for the Indians this season. On offense, Martinez has 493 passing yards, 566 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns. On defense, he has 48 tackles, a sack and an interception as a defensive back.

Ysleta will need all of Martinez' talents entering Friday's game with Parkland to start District 1-5A Division I play. Martinez is also a standout baseball player for the YHS program.
