Week 2 Delaware high school football roundup: Dover makes big statement with dominant win

MIDDLETOWN - The winner of Thursday night’s game between No. 4-ranked Dover and No. 5 Appoquinimink was going to be stamped a serious contender for the DIAA Class 3A football title.

After three quarters, everyone knew exactly how dangerous the Senators could be.

Jakwon Kilby rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns and Nahseem Cosme threw two scoring passes to Jaheim Cole as Dover went on the road and scored a decisive 45-7 victory.

“We prepped all week for this, and we came out here and we dominated,” Kilby said.

The Senators (3-0) scored on the third play from scrimmage, as Cole took a short pass from Cosme, made a defender miss and sprinted 59 yards.

Then Dover forced a punt and went 57 yards in eight plays, with Kilby covering the final 6 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Appo (1-1) answered with a 2-yard scoring run by Ja’den Glover, but Cosme threw a 14-yard TD pass to Cole and Brandon Yoder kicked a 29-yard field goal on the final play of the half for a 24-7 lead.

Then the Senators really put it in overdrive. Dover went on scoring drives of 45, 64 and 45 yards in the third quarter, with Kilby scoring from the 3 and the 11 and Shameek Morris’ 8-yard run triggering the running clock for the fourth quarter.

The Senators piled up 460 total yards, all with a simple approach.

“We’re not giving them too much. We’re not overdoing it,” Dover coach Chip Knapp said. “… I’ve seen over the years with offensive coordinators, a lot of plays but not mastering them. We’re trying to master them, then move on to the next play. We have a menu of plays that we’re building on.”

Cosme completed 10 of 15 passes for 141 yards, and Morris rushed for 81 yards on just nine carries. Cole had five receptions for 100 yards.

The Jaguars’ offense took a hit when All-State running back Daniel McConomy left the game late in the first quarter and was unable to return.

Appo QB Greg Nielsen completed 12 of 18 passes for 128 yards, with Dillon Griffith catching five for 48 yards and Dominic Montebell snagging four for 50 yards. Camren Crews rushed seven times for 37 yards and Glover carried 11 times for 31 yards.

Brandywine 13, Concord 12

BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – The Bulldogs (1-1) stopped a two-point conversion attempt with 16 seconds left to snap a 10-game losing streak.

The Raiders (1-1) scored first in the second quarter when Jackson LaPerle returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown.

It stayed that way until the fourth quarter, when Crisdon Wright ran for a 6-yard score and returned an interception 27 yards for a second TD to push Brandywine ahead 13-6.

Concord pulled within 13-12 on Jack Pope’s 11-yard touchdown pass to James Skinner in the final minute, but the Bulldogs’ defense made the next stop for the win.

Wilmington Friends 48, Dickinson 6

MILLTOWN – Ryan Tattersall threw three touchdown passes to Jason Hughes and rushed for a fourth score as the Quakers (2-0) pushed their winning streak to 15.

Tattersall threw an early 31-yard scoring strike to Hughes and ran for a 4-yard TD. Then Myles Johnson and Andrew McKenzie returned interceptions for touchdowns to give Friends a 27-0 lead after one quarter.

Tattersall and Hughes connected for TDs of 38 and 9 yards to make it 41-0 at halftime.

Kanye Anderson got the Rams (0-2) on the board with a 3-yard run, and Hughes finished the scoring with a 2-yard run.

Middletown 56, Odessa 0

MIDDLETOWN – Austin Troyer and Derian Cunningham combined to throw five touchdown passes – three to Matt Priestley – as the top-ranked Cavaliers (3-0) romped past the Ducks (0-3) in the first installment of a new Appoquinimink School District rivalry.

Troyer’s first three TD throws covered 21 yards to Ronnell Davis and 15 and 38 yards to Priestley. Then Cunningham hit Priestley from 7 yards out for a 28-0 lead after one quarter.

Tucker Dashiell ran for a 2-yard score, B.J. Garrett hauled in a 43-yard TD pass from Troyer and Aviyon Matthews caught a 35-yarder from Cunningham to make it 49-0 at the half.

Chase Foxworth scored on a 12-yard run for Middletown in the third quarter. Dorian Rutledge intercepted a pass for the Cavaliers.

Friday’s games

Caravel 56, Howard 34

GLASGOW – Craig Miller rushed for 182 yards and teammate but no relation Jordan Miller ran for 148 as the Buccaneers outscored the Wildcats at Peoples Stadium.

Craig Miller’s 16 carries included 19-, 64- and 2-yard touchdown runs. Jordan’s 26 carries featured 2- and 3-yard TD runs on Caravel’s first two possessions.

Truman Auwerda passed 29 yards to Vandrick Hamlin III for another Caravel TD and scored on a keeper from the 1. Josiah Crawford’s 50-yard interception return was the other TD for Caravel (2-0), which also got an 8-for-8 night on PAT kicks by Logan Keld.

A fumble-forcing hit by Charles Broadard, who recovered the loose ball, set up one Caravel TD and Hamlin’s fumble recovery led to another.

The Bucs did have their hands full with Howard quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr., who completed 26 of 34 passes for 350 yards and five touchdowns and also rushed for 59 yards.

His TD passes covered 45 yards and 63 yards to Jamal Johnson, 27 yards to Desai Drummond and 6 and 9 yards to Robert Kelly.

Johnson’s seven catches netted 175 yards, and Amir Maddrey had 10 catches for 79 yards for Howard (0-2).

Red Lion Christian 28, Lake Forest 6

RED LION – The Lions (2-1) got three rushing touchdowns from freshman Mehki Corbin and used a strong red-zone defense to throttle the visiting Spartans.

Corbin’s first TD came in the first quarter on a 20-yard run. His second score broke 6-6 tie on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter.

Corbin and Giovanni Ramirez had touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards for Red Lion Christian in the fourth quarter.

The Lions’ defense stopped Lake Forest from scoring three times in the red zone, forcing a turnover on downs each time.

Mount Pleasant 28, McKean 26

PENNY HILL – The last of four lead changes came on Derrick Prosser’s 1-yard run with 7:56 left, and the Green Knights (1-2) made a final defensive stop to outlast the Highlanders (0-2).

McKean took a 6-0 lead on Jy’aire Wilson’s 1-yard run, only to see Mount Pleasant surge ahead 13-6 on Naim Dudley’s 34-yard run and Cameron Wright’s 25-yard pass to Stephen Clark.

The Highlanders pulled within a point on Damyen Jones’ 49-yard scoring strike to Liam Kennedy, but the Green Knights pushed the halftime margin to 21-12 on another Wright-to-Dudley connection from 8 yards.

McKean forged ahead in the second half, as Jones threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to Nathan Boyles and 71 yards to Shaquille Lebrew to make it 26-21.

But Mount drove 64 yards for its final score, regaining the lead on Prosser’s TD. The Highlanders reached the Knights 20 on their final drive, only to see a fourth-down pass fall incomplete with 1:38 remaining.

Prosser led all rushers with 14 carries for 101 yards, with Dudley adding 53 yards on 11 runs. Wright completed 9 of 14 passes for 160 yards.

Jones passed for 206 yards for McKean, with Lebrew catching four for 119 yards and Kennedy snagging three for 98 yards.

Indian River 20, St. Elizabeth 14

WILMINGTON – The two highest-ranked teams in Class 1A went down to the wire at Abessinio Stadium, with the No. 1 Indians (2-0) stopping the No. 2 Vikings’ (0-2) fourth-down pass from the 4 with seven seconds remaining for the win.

Indian River led 7-0 at halftime on a 19-yard scoring run by Jayvion Chandler.

Then both offenses picked it up in the second half. St. Elizabeth pulled within 7-6 on Jihad Brown’s 73-yard run, and the Indians pushed their lead to 14-6 on Davon Handy’s 11-yard run.

Brown scored again, this time from the 8, and QB Cole Andrews’ two-point run tied it at 14.

IR traveled 71 yards in 13 plays for the final go-ahead score, Dylan Grise’s 1-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal with 3:51 remaining.

The Vikings then drove from their own 27 to the Indians’ 4, but their fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Chandler rushed 25 times for 119 yards for Indian River, with Handy adding 69 yards on 11 runs and Darnell Stokes gaining 57 on six attempts.

Brown carried 13 times for 145 yards for St. E. Gavin Andrews caught three passes for 86 yards.

Laurel 24, Caesar Rodney 19

LAUREL – Patrick Belle rushed 24 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs (2-1) held off the Riders (0-3).

Xavier Limehouse added 108 yards on the ground for Laurel.

Saturday’s games

Hodgson 20, St. Georges 17

MIDDLETOWN – Marlon Sparks’ juggling interception near the goal line with seven seconds to play clinched the Silver Eagles’ (2-1) win over their vo-tech rivals.

Hodgson led 20-9 after Maki Beach’s third touchdown run – a 1-yard plunge with 7:06 to play.

The Hawks (1-1) were facing third-and-10 from their own 9 when Tim Whichard hit Emory Womack for a 91-yard touchdown pass to pull St. Georges within 20-17 with 2:44 to play.

The Silver Eagles lined up to punt from their own 44 with 19 seconds remaining, but the snap sailed high and the Hawks recovered at the 25 with 13 seconds to go.

The Hawks’ final pass spiraled toward the goal line, but Sparks was positioned in front of a receiver and tipped and juggled the ball before cradling it for the interception.

“I just saw it, and I knew I wasn’t dropping it,” Sparks said. “I was bobbling it, but I knew I had to come down with it.”

Beach rushed 22 times for 130 yards for Hodgson. Xavier Brown completed 8 of 14 passes for 90 yards.

Camron Montgomery (13 carries, 64 yards) ran 51 yards for a Hawks touchdown, and St. Georges’ Elijah Burke tackled a punter in the end zone for a safety.

Saint Mark’s 34, Archmere 30

CLAYMONT – Keigan Barnes’ 33-yard run was the only score of the fourth quarter and provided the seventh and final lead change as the Spartans (1-1) outlasted the Auks (1-1).

James Campbell passed for touchdowns of 44 yards to Jude Campbell and 39 yards to Logan Klein and also scored on a 2-yard run. Barnes also had a 1-yard TD plunge for Saint Mark’s.

Miles Kempski passed for 338 yards, including scoring throws of 70 yards to Drew Duncan and 32 yards to Gavin Lee, for Archmere. The senior QB also scored on runs of 1 and 8 yards, and Cole Fenice kicked a 32-yard field goal.

Tower Hill 14, Newark 12

NEWARK – Michael Waesco threw for two touchdowns and Tommy Hanna’s two extra points provided the winning margin as the Hillers (2-0) edged the Yellowjackets (1-1).

Newark took a 6-0 lead on Makeevis Rogers’ 20-yard pass to Byron Reeves. Tower Hill went ahead 7-6 on Waesco’s 12-yard strike to Christian Martin.

The Yellowjackets regained the lead on Shaun Whyte’s 35-yard in the third quarter, but Waesco found Kevin Coleman for the decisive 80-yard score in the fourth quarter.
