Week 11 football: Lake Mary blanks Mainland; Edgewater, Apopka, Jones beat rivals

The old Orlando high school football rivalry matching Boone vs. Edgewater was one of several big Week 11 games Friday that wrapped up a memorable 2022 regular season.

Both the Braves and the unbeaten Eagles already had secured playoff spots as district champions.

Lake Mary’s game at undefeated Mainland in Daytona Beach and the Dr. Phillips-at-Jones games spotlighted four more playoff-bound teams.

The FHSAA is scheduled to unveil its state playoff pairings Sunday at 10 a.m. in a live broadcast on its YouTube channel.

Four district champions and four at-large teams per region in large classifications qualify for the postseason based on FHSAA power rankings. Class 1M advances two district champs and two additional at-large teams per region.

No. 1 Edgewater 42, Boone 14

The Edgewater Eagles continued to soar, racking up more than 500 yards and getting scoring from five players while keeping possession of the Spirit Barrel trophy.

Edgewater scored 28 unanswered points over the last three quarters to pull away from old Orlando rival Boone (5-5), which played admirably over the first 12 minutes.

In going unbeaten (10-0) for the second consecutive regular season, Edgewater stretched its in-season win streak to 28 games. The Eagles now prepare for the Class 3 Metro playoffs, which begin next week.

Boone heads to the Class 4M playoffs, also as a district champion.

“It feels great,” Edgewater coach Cameron Duke said of finishing unbeaten in the regular season again. “It’s definitely the seniors and a lot of people that made that happen.”

Prior to last year, the only perfect regular season in Edgewater annals came in 1972 under coach Bob Dolce. Edgewater’s 1968 team, coached by Don Blackwelder, went 9-0-1.

Senior running back Kaden Shields-Dutton ran for two touchdowns, including a spectacular 80-yard score in the first quarter. And senior wide receiver AJ Howard caught two TD passes from Michael Clayton.

Brandon Paul also scored after picking up a fumble by a teammate and running 41 yards for a TD, and Jaden Brown returned an interception 23 yards for a TD.

The Eagles’ defense allowed a TD pass from Sam Johnson to Isaiah Mizell and a 6-yard TD run by Laggarius Marshell in the first quarter. Edgewater forced six punts and two turnovers the rest of the way.

“They’re a really good team,” said Boone coach Andy Johnson. “They have a chance to win a state championship in 3 Metro.”

Clayton finished with more than 220 yards passing, with 141 going to Howard. Shields-Dutton ran for more than 165 yards.

No. 3 Lake Mary 31, Daytona Beach Mainland 0

The Lake Mary defense, led by junior linebacker Luke Prieto, handed previously unbeaten Mainland (9-1) its first shutout loss in six seasons in a matchup of teams ranked No. 1 in the state in their classification.

As usual, the offense for Lake Mary (9-1) was stellar. Sophomore quarterback Noah Grubbs hooked up with senior receiver Caden Harshbarger three times for touchdown passes.

Junior running back Isaiah Thomas plowed through a tough Buccaneers defense for over 100 yards on the ground.

Grubbs has 44 TD passes for the season.

The state leader coming into the game, according to MaxPreps, was Haden Klees of Class 2A Wakulla (10-0) with 44. He’s a senior Samford commit.

“Our defense, and actually both sides of the ball, offensively, going against a team like that, that’s tough sleddin’,” Lake Mary coach Scott Perry said. “They’ve got 5-star guys and 4-star guys and major D-I guys, and we got guys who just love to play football.”

Coming into the game, Perry was a bit concerned about the stamina of some of his players due to an illness that spread around the Lake Mary campus. Offensive tackle Josh Raymond, who is committed to Vanderbilt, had the flu all week, but he toughed it out through three quarters. Fortunately for him, he was able to rest much of the fourth quarter with the game in hand.

Prieto was also bogged down all week with illness, but it didn’t show on the field. He had a fumble recovery on the game’s first possession, resulting in a Luke Shale 24-yard field goal. In the third quarter, Prieto blocked a punt, scooped up the loose ball inside the 5-yard line and ran it into the end zone.

“A lot of guys on the team had the flu this week,” Prieto said. “I felt really good out there and all the glory to God. It was really our whole team. … I think it was a statement win and we needed that to really bounce back for the playoffs.

“I’m really excited about it and I think we can go far.”

Prieto was helped on defense by linebacker John Scarelli, who had two sacks; cornerback Jameson Jean, who did not allow a pass completion, and safety Emiril Gant, who had numerous pass deflections.

The last time Mainland was held scoreless was in a 20-0 loss to eventual state champion Dr. Phillips in September, 2017. Lake Mary will likely travel to Boone for its first-round playoff game. The Rams find out for sure Sunday.

TOUCHDOWN: To cap a long drive that was mostly handoffs to running back Isaiah Thomas, Lake Mary increases its lead at Mainland to 17-0 on a 4-yard pass from Noah Grubbs to Caden Harshbarger. The score came with 17 seconds to go in the first half.

On a drive that has gone about 60 yards with all handoffs to Isaiah Thomas, Lake Mary is at Mainland’s 7-yard line with 28 seconds left in the half.

Carson Hinshaw appeared to have a Lake Mary touchdown catch in the back of the end zone but it was waved off. Lake Mary’s field goal attempt caromed off the left upright, no good.

DeLand (8-2) is a repeat district champ for the first time since it won three in a row (2010-12) under three different head coaches. The Bulldogs were a district runner-up to Mainland in their 2009 state runner-up season.

No. 5 Jones 37, No. 11 Dr. Phillips 10

It’s been more than a month since Jones was forced to play a full four quarters of football.

That changed Friday as a sloppy first half on Senior Night vs. visiting Dr. Phillips (6-4) led to additional playing time for starters on the eve of the FHSAA postseason.

The Tigers (7-3), hampered by penalties and inconsistent play early on, pulled away in the second half by scoring on four consecutive drives.

Jones led 14-10 at the break before sophomore quarterback Dereon Coleman connected with Jacques Varner in the corner of the end zone for a 20-yard TD that essentially put the game on ice.

“That’s why we kept them in until the last six minutes,” Jones coach Elijah Williams said of his starters. “We haven’t been conditioned past halftime the last five weeks. I’m glad it was a closer game because we need those guys to go play [four quarters] once we get in the playoffs.”

Jones entered the week having won its past five games by a combined 281-75 margin.

Coleman ran for a touchdown late in the first half and Jerrian Parker scored two rushing TDs, the second of which put Jones in front 27-10 early in the fourth quarter.

D’Antre Robinson tallied two sacks, Lamarius Fair snagged a second-half interception and DeAndre McDaniel recovered a fumble in the win.

A new state-of-the-art video board at Jones was turned on for the first time before the start of the game.

The Tigers, winners of six in a row since starting the season 1-3, were ranked No. 5 in this week’s Class 3M Region 1 rankings.

Jones is now 3-2 against DP, with three wins over the past three years.

First play from scrimmage for DP following the Jones TD resulted in an impressive interception grab over the middle by Lamarius Fair. Tigers turned it into a 27-yard FG by Johnley David with 6:44 left. Jones leads DP 30-10.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones went for it on 4th-and-2 from the 19-yard line and converted on a trick play that went for 15 yards. Quarterback Trevor Jackson rushed to the 1-yard line on the next play and Jerrian Parker finished the drive with a TD run to give Tigers a 27-10 lead with 10:32 to play.

Trevor Jackson is in at quarterback for Jones. He just completed a 47-yard pass down the middle of field to Vernell Brown, who was penalized for spiking the ball when he got up from the turf. Tigers are down to the DP 40.

D’Antre Robinson recorded his second sack on a third down that forced DP to punt. Jones takes over at its own 17 with 4:42 to go in 3rd. Tigers lead 20-10.

TOUCHDOWN: Dr. Phillips went for it on 4th-and-3 in its own territory to open the second half and turned the ball over on an incompletion. Jones took over at the DP 40 and scored five plays later on a 20-yard pass play from Dereon Coleman to Jacquez Varner with 8:48 left in the 3rd. Extra point was no good. Jones leads 20-10.

Halftime: Sentinel Super 16 No. 5 Jones leads No. 11 Dr. Phillips 14-10.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones broke up a pass in the end zone. DP then went for it on 4th down from the Jones 25 and moved the chains on a QB keeper by Stanley Anderson, who then broke free for a 17-yard run down to the goal line. Jones then stuffed a run and DP hurried back to the line and snapped it again, this time scoring when Anderson appeared to fumble the ball before recovering it and reaching the end zone with 11.9 seconds to spare in the half. Jones lead trimmed to 14-10.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones QB Dereon Coleman rushed through the left side on a keeper for 15-yard TD with 2:57 to go in first half. Jerrian Parker did the bulk of the work out of the backfield after the Tigers started with great field position. Jones leads 14-3. DP got a huge kick return by A’Mani George to take over at Jones 32.

D’Antre Robinson recorded a sack on 3rd down. Dr. Phillips lined up to go for it on 4th down from its own 27 in hopes of getting Jones to jump offsides, but Tigers took over at DP 45 following a bad punt attempt.

Dr. Phillips recorded a sack to force 3rd-and-long and the Tigers nearly converted. Vernell Brown hauled in a pass and appeared to come up just short of the sticks, but a holding call on Jones brought it back even further. Jones came up well short on the ensuring pass play and was forced to punt. DP takes over at own 23 with 7:02 left in 2nd.

Taylor Harris booted a 37-yard field goal for DP to cut the Jones lead to 7-3 with 9:59 to go in 2nd quarter. Tigers take over at own 47.

End of first quarter: Jones leads Dr. Phillips 7-0. DP has ball at Jones 27.

Jones gets nothing done with the turnover. DP takes over following punt at the Jones 36 with 49 seconds to go in 1st.

Receptions by Brandan Johnson and Mykel Calixte set up a 4th-and-1 for DP. Quarterback Stanley Anderson rushed for the first down, but after calling his own number on the very next play he fumbled the ball away. DeAndre McDaniel with the recovery for Jones.

TOUCHDOWN: Receptions by Jacquez Varner and Vernell Brown of Jones and an 8-yard carry by Jerrian Parker pushed the Tigers down to the 4-yard line. Parker ran through the left side of the line for a TD with 5:46 to go in 1st quarter. Jones leads DP 7-0.

Two penalties send DP in the wrong direction. Bad snap on 3rd down goes over the head of quarterback Stanley Anderson and Dallas Coy records the tackle to force a punt. Jones takes over at DP 35 at 7:12 in 1st.

Sophomore Dereon Coleman got the start at quarterback for Jones. Tigers had to burn a timeout after getting a delay-of-game penalty on third down. Kramer Brown recorded a sack to force a punt. DP takes over at Jones 48 with 9:27 to go in 1st.

Kickoff was delayed at Jones as they finished up Senior Night recognition. Dr. Phillips won the coin toss and has elected to kick the ball to Jones. We are moments from starting this one following a delay of nearly 20 minutes.

A state-of-the-art video board at Jones High was turned on for the first time before the start of Friday’s game.

McCoy Federal Credit Union, Florida Citrus Sports and Florida Blue teamed up to replace the existing scoreboard at the north end zone.

A pregame ceremony included a ribbon-cutting with representatives from Orange County Public Schools.

“We’re proud to support Jones High School and a generation of student-athletes through investments in facilities upgrades at Booker T. Reddick Field,” McCoy Federal Credit Union CEO Alvin Cowans said in a press release. “It’s an honor to be part of an incredible team striving to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy in The Communities of West Lakes.”

Cowans was an all-SEC defensive back at the University of Florida in the 1970s.

Jones beat DP 48-13 in 2021 and 35-14 last season. DP won 37-6 in 1997 and 31-6 in 1998 in the only previous meetings.

No. 6 Olympia 28, Groveland South Lake 0

The 4M district champ Titans (8-2) became the first team in program history to win eight games in a regular season.

Olympia finished 8-3 counting bowl game wins in 2007 and 2008.

Running back Kevens Charles of South Lake (2-8) surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in the loss.

No. 7 Lake Minneola 43, Lakeland Lake Gibson 36

The Hawks improved to 7-3 with the win at Lake Gibson (5-5) and should be back home next week as a district champion.

No. 8 Winter Park 47, Lake Brantley 24

Winter Park (9-0) recorded its seventh perfect regular season since 1972. The Wildcats were 10-0 in 1972, 1980, 1983, 2010 and 2017. They were 9-0 in 1982.

The district champ Wildcats are in a tight race with Apopka and Jacksonville Mandarin for the No. 3 seed in the 4M Region 1 bracket.

Lake Brantley, which forfeited a win earlier in the season, finished 1-9.

No. 9 Orange City University 41, Deltona 0

The Titans (9-1), ranked No. 3 in 4S, set a school record for wins in a season.

UHS was 8-2 in 2014, 8-3 in 2015, and 8-2 in 2016.

Deltona finished 1-9.

No. 10 Apopka 29, No. 13 Wekiva 28

After trailing by 19 points late in the third quarter, the Blue Darters (7-3) stormed back to score 20 unanswered points and win back the Mayor’s Cup trophy.

“We really needed that,” Apopka coach Jeff Rolson said. “It’s been a struggle this year with some issues [and] just guys [being] injured. We lost three games, which isn’t a big deal, but we just haven’t played the way we want. But to come back and really put it together there and finish the way we did, it really feels great. It’s a blessing and hopefully we’ll grow from it.”

Blue Darters senior running back Nathan Jenkins III led the rally, running for three touchdowns in the second half. That included a game-winning 27-yard run to put Apopka up for good with 4:05 left in the game.

“He had some issues in the first half and like a great Blue Darter, he overcame in the second half,” Rolson said. “He did a great job, so I’m happy for him. You don’t want to see guys go out on a low note, and he picked it up and was really great in the second half.”

Wekiva (4-6), which opened to decrease overcrowding at Apopka, had won five of the previous seven meetings.

The Mustangs threw their best punch early, leading 28-9 with 2:29 left in the third quarter. Ty’Ray Davis threw touchdown passes of 45 yards to junior receiver Michael Ellis and 66 yard to junior Jabari Smith.

Davis brought Wekiva on the cusp of an upset victory with a 30-yard pass to Ellis that moved them to the Blue Darters’ 10-yard line, setting up first-and-goal with 1:28 left in the game. Apopka responded with back-to-back sacks by senior defensive linemen Lorenzo Payne and Kevin Roberts, then forced an incomplete pass to make it fourth-and-goal at the 27-yard line.

Wekiva’s junior kicker, Christ Innocent, attempted a go-ahead 44-yard field goal for the Mustangs with 41 seconds remaining, but the kick was short.

Wekiva’s season is likely over after the loss.

Apopka is headed to the 4M playoffs and will learn its opponent when the FHSAA unveils brackets Sunday morning.

“It’s better to win in the manner we did than to go out there and dominate the whole game because we really had to dig deep and had some special things happen for us,” Rolson said. “I think it’s going to help us a lot.”

Wekiva had won five of the previous seven games, but Apopka’s rally to win likely knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs.

No. 12 Oviedo 48, Hagerty 14

Oviedo senior QB Jackson LaTour threw for four touchdowns in a homefield rivalry win that closed out an 8-2 regular season for the Lions.

LaTour has thrown for 35 touchdowns and ran for four more this season. He has thrown for at least four TDs in six of Oviedo’s 10 games.

“He’s a special kid, man,” Oviedo coach Greg Odierno said. “I’m so proud of him; he’s come a long way. Really a lot of testament and credit goes to the O-line and the receivers. We have a phenomenal group up front and when they can give him time back there, he’ll pick you apart.”

The Lions will carry a seven-game win streak into the Class 3M playoffs as a district champ.

“We got off to a rough start, 1-2, but to turn that around into an 8-2 season, I’m extremely proud of these boys’ grit and determination,” Odierno said. “Now it’s on to the next week. When you get into the playoffs in 3M in the state of Florida, you’re going to go against a quality opponent.”

Hagerty (6-4) is in the running for a 4M Region 1 at-large berth.

Oviedo leads this backyard rivalry 15-3 after winning 13 of the past 14 clashes.

TOUCHDOWN: Oviedo senior QB Jackson LaTour passed to senior WR Cameron Keels across the middle and he raced to the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown. PAT was good. Oviedo 7, Hagerty 0 with 5:36 in 1Q.

After a three-and-out from each team to start the game, Hagerty was able to get to the Oviedo 32-yard line before an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the ball back to Oviedo.

Oviedo forced a three-and-out from Hagerty on its first drive and will start on its own 13-yard line after the punt.

No. 15 Bishop Moore 42, Lakeland Kathleen 14

The road win makes the Hornets 7-3 with seven straight wins going into the Class 2M playoffs as a district champion.

Six Bishop Moore players scored touchdowns: senior wideout Nolan Munroe, senior tight end Alex Gonzalez, senior running back Ladainian Sweeney, junior two-way player Devon St Clair, junior wideout Will Jusme, and sophomore Kenyon Alston, who scored twice.

QB Bjorn Jurgensen threw 5 touchdown passes.

The defense was led by sophomore Jake Kreul and seniors Aaron Reabe and Omari Reid.

Kathleen finished 1-9.

The Trojans (5-5) locked down a 4M playoff berth with the homefield win vs. the Lions (4-6).

Kissimmee Osceola 21, West Orange 10

Osceola (4-6) is under .500 for the first time since 2005 (2-8), but the Kowboys are playoff-bound for the 17th consecutive season as a 4S district champion.

West Orange finishes 3-7.

Eustis 32, Merritt Island 28

A forfeit loss hurt Eustis’ standing in 2S Region 3, but a district championship assures the Panthers (7-3) of a playoff experience. The Mustangs are 6-4.

Orlando Christian Prep 35, Northside Christian 16

OCP, ranked No. 2 in 1M Region 1, matched it 9-1 regular season mark of 2021 — the year the Warriors reached a state semifinal.

The Master’s Academy 47, Zarephath Academy 36

The offense for the Eagles (8-2) continued to thrive as they outscored Zarephath (5-5) to qualify for this year’s Sunshine State Athletic Association championship game.

Master’s will play Westminster Academy of Fort Lauderdale in the title game, which will be played Saturday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland.

TMA won the league title in 2019.
