Week 10: Five things Ohio State fans should know about Rutgers

On Saturday,Rutgers football will host No. 3 Ohio State on Military Appreciation Day. Rutgers football will wear white helmets with the American flag inside the ‘Block R’ for the occasion while having a flyover by the New Jersey National Guard following the national anthem.

Heading into Week 10, the Scarlet Knights are 6-2 this season with a 5-0 home record. Also, Rutgers football is 11-5 under head coach Greg Schiano after their bye week. Through eight games this season, Rutgers has three Big Ten wins, matching the program high previously set on three other occasions.

 

The Scarlet Knights are entering November with six wins for the eighth time in program history, the fifth this century, and the first time in the Big Ten era. They joined the conference in 2014.

Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai is ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten for rushing yards

 

Heading into Saturday’s matchup against the Buckeyes, Rutgers junior running back Kyle Monangai is ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten with 744 rushing yards. Through eight games this season, Monangai has recorded 144 carries for 744 yards and seven touchdowns. The Roseland, New Jersey, native has averaged 5.2 yards per attempt and 93 yards per game. Entering Week 10, Monangai is ranked No. 27 in the nation for his 744 rushing yards.

Rutgers is ranked No. 16 in the nation for fewest penalties

 

Heading into Week 10, Rutgers football is ranked No. 16 in the nation with the fewest penalties. Through eight games, the Scarlet Knights have registered 36 penalties, ranking No. 4 in the Big Ten. Rutgers has recorded 331 penalty yards, averaging 41.4 penalty yards per game. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano has his team playing disciplined football, reflecting their 6-2 record through eight games.

Rutgers defense is ranked No. 6 in the nation for red zone defense

 

Through eight games this season, the Rutgers defense has been lights out in the red zone, ranking No. 6 in the nation. The Scarlet Knight has allowed 15 scores on 22 attempts this season, stopping opponents 68.2 percent of the time inside the red zone. Inside the red zone, Rutgers has allowed six rushing touchdowns, six receiving touchdowns, and three field goals. Heading into Week 10, the Scarlet Knights are ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten for red zone defense.

Rutgers defense is ranked No. 9 in the nation for total defense

 

On Saturday, the Buckeyes will be facing the Scarlet Knights with the No. 9 ranked defense in the nation. Rutgers defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak has allowed 2214 yards on 510 plays, averaging 4.34 yards per play. Schiano’s defense has allowed an average of 276.8 yards per game, ranking No. 4 in the Big Ten. Through 510 plays, Rutgers has allowed 964 rushing yards and 1250 passing yards in eight games.

The Scarlet Knights are ranked No. 25 in the nation for time of possession

 

The Rutgers rushing attack has been solid heading into Week 10, led by Monangai’s 744 rushing yards. Rutgers’ ground attack and quarterback Gavin Wimsatt’s ability to protect the football has helped the Scarlet Knights control the time of possession. Through eight games this season, Rutgers is ranked No. 25 in the nation for time of possession. The Scarlet Knights have recorded 255:12 total time of possession, averaging 31:54 per game. The ability to move the chains on offense has allowed the Scarlet Knights to rank No. 4 in the Big Ten in time of possession.
