What will weather be like for 2025 NFL draft in Green Bay? Be ready for any season, from rain to snow to sun

GREEN BAY - Chances are that weather in Green Bay the week of the 2025 National Football League Draft won't duplicate April 23 and 24 of 1980.

That two-day span saw an extreme range of conditions that seems highly unlikely to repeat: from an 89-degree high on April 23, 1980, to a 0.5-inch snowfall the night of April 24.

But even in years with less extreme weather, things can vary significantly. This year's April temps ranged from a low of 25 to a high of 86; the city was hit by snow on April 1, and rain later in the month.

That could make for some interesting challenges for crews in late March 2025 when set-up work begins in earnest around Lambeau Field and the Titletown District, about a month before the draft. A significant snowfall like the 24.2 inches that blanketed Green Bay April 13-16, 2018, could be problematic during preparations. So could the nearly 10 inches Green Bay recorded on April 19, 2011, and possibly the 10 inches the city received on March 25 this year.

Other than that, though, weather in Green Bay as it hosts the 2025 draft could be chilly, warm or anything in-between.

"The days can get quite warm, while the nights can quickly become cooler," said National Weather Service meteorologist Roy Eckburg, who has been issuing forecasts for the Green Bay area since 2001.

Asked to share advice with people who are likely to have to spend time outside for the 2025 draft, Eckburg chuckled softly, but wasn't willing to go beyond saying it's a safe bet that draft-goers would benefit from wearing, or at least bringing, a light jacket when visiting Wisconsin. Most of the 240,000 fans expected to attend the draft will be outside the stadium.

A typical April day in Titletown , Eckburg said, means a high temperature in the upper 50s and a low in the 30s. But football fans will need to pack a range of clothing, and read the forecast within a few days of the draft, to best be outfitted for Green Bay weather in late April.

The actual days of the draft have yet to be made public, but the event is typically in late April. The 2024 draft, in Detroit, will be April 25-27. Kansas City hosted this year's draft from April 27-29.

Eckburg, who is well-versed in the history of adverse weather in Green Bay and surrounding communities, cited a range of climate facts involving the Green Bay region, including:

Snow, snow go away

You can count on getting snow in April in Wisconsin. It may not be the 8.2 inches Green Bay got in 1910 or the 9.9 inches on April 19, 2011, or the 2 feet in 2018. That much snow requires a monumental effort to clear in normal times, and if you're a week or two away from the draft, it becomes even more of a challenge.

Peak tornado season

Add tornadoes to the wonders of April weather. Wisconsin's peak tornado season is April to August, according to ReadyWisconsin. This year, the state saw 15 tornadoes recorded on March 31 alone, but none affected Green Bay. The state averages almost 25 tornadoes per year. In the previous decade, roughly three twisters occurred in March or April; none in Green Bay.

A twister classified as an "F4" struck the Appleton area on April 27, 1984, one of six tornadoes detected on that day. Appleton, where most visiting NFL teams stay before playing in Green Bay, is 26 miles from Lambeau Field.

April showers

A typical April in Green Bay sees about 3 inches of rainfall. This year has been particularly heavy, however; the weather service reports Green Bay receiving 10.53 inches of precipitation, including 14 days in March where rainfall was recorded and three others where observers detected a trace.

If the draft had been in Green Bay this year, fans would have seen highs of 63 and 65 April 27 and 28, with lows in the 30s and then 46 on April 29 with some rain.
