WATCH: No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young gets ‘the call’ from Panthers

Despite being the prospective pick for the Carolina Panthers atop the 2023 NFL draft, Bryce Young maintained that the team never told him any such thing ahead of time. They waited until Thursday night instead.

That moment came right before his name was called by Commissioner Roger Goodell with this year’s first overall selection, as he told WCNC’s Nick Carboni backstage in Kansas City.

“I knew when I looked at my phone five minutes before and saw a Charlotte number,” he replied after being asked when he finally knew he was the Panthers’ guy. “It was a whirlwind of emotion being able to talk to the entire staff. That’s something I’ll cherish forever.”

Carboni then asked Young what some of the team’s big dogs told him during the call. And although we love Nick’s work and wouldn’t mind transcribing more of Bryce’s words, we’ll just let the actual chat do the talking . . .
