Washington vs. Eagles game recap: Everything we know

The Washington Football Team started fast, opening up with a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, before crashing hard and falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-17, Tuesday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The story of this game should be about Washington quarterback Garrett Gilbert making an emergency start for the WFT with Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen on the reserve/COVID-19 list. However, Gilbert did some things well, considering he’d only been with the team four days.

The story of this game was Washington’s poor defensive play. The Eagles managed to roll up 519 total yards, including an embarrassing 238 yards rushing. Meanwhile, Gilbert received no help from Washington’s running game, as the WFT rushed for only 63 yards.

Now, here’s everything we know from Philadelphia’s 27-17 win over Washington.

Keys to the game

  • Washington was without so many critical performers, including Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen, Brandon Scherff, Kam Curl, Kendall Fuller, among others. No, it’s not an excuse, but it’s reality. William Jackson III was lost for the game in the first half, leaving Darryl Roberts and Corn Elder as Washington’s corners with Danny Johnson.

  • The defensive line wasn’t much better, and they have fewer excuses. It’s inexcusable that Washington allowed 238 rushing yards.

  • The linebackers were absent. S/LB Landon Collins made plays in the first half before being hobbled with an injury.

  • Washington could not run the football. Had Washington been able to run the ball, there’s less pressure on Gilbert. Gilbert did not lose this game for Washington

Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen weren’t activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Sure, neither quarterback could make up for Washington’s defensive issues, but Heinicke and Allen are mobile and can extend plays. While Washington still likely loses this game with Heinicke or Allen, the offense looks more functional, making up for a lack of a running game and poor pass protection.

Players of the game

  • Safety Jeremy Reaves: 12 tackles, nine solo stops.

  • S/LB Landon Collins: 6 tackles, one fumble recovery, one interception.

  • DT Jonathan Allen: 7 tackles, one sack.

Offensive line struggled

It was a tough night for Washington’s offensive line. The WFT couldn’t run the ball; they struggled to keep Gilbert clean, although he did tend to hold onto the ball a bit too long at times.

It was Sam Cosmi’s first game back after his second absence. He struggled. Saahdiq Charles had issues in place of Brandon Scherff and Keith Ismael looked like a fourth-string center. Ereck Flowers didn’t have his best game either. Charles Leno held up well.

Washington’s offensive line has been terrific this season, but the injuries have impacted the WFT over the last two weeks.

Things do not get easier for Washington. It has a trip to Dallas in just five days. The Cowboys dominated the WFT in Week 14. Washington hopes to get several players back from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
