Washington State volleyball coach Jen Greeny is heading to West Virginia

Dec. 21—Jen Greeny, the longtime Washington State volleyball coach who also led the Lewis-Clark State program, is headed to West Virginia.

Greeny and Mountaineers athletic director Wren Baker announced the hire Wednesday.

Greeny coached WSU for 13 seasons, leading the Cougars to the NCAA tournament the last eight years. She compiled a 235-175 record at WSU and made two trips to the Sweet 16, including one this fall.

Greeny was also a player and an assistant coach at WSU and a coach at Pullman High School.

Across all her time at WSU, Greeny was a player, assistant or head coach during all of the program's best years.

"Today is bittersweet. I bid farewell to the university that has shaped me, challenged me and given me memories to last a lifetime," Greeny said in a statement. "Rebuilding a program and putting our stamp on Cougar volleyball has been an amazing ride."

Greeny's departure comes amid the collapse of the Pac-12 — one of the top conferences in NCAA volleyball. Only WSU and Oregon State remain in the conference as the other 10 schools will leave next year.

"Unfortunately, with the challenging and uncertain times, we feel it is time to start a new journey," Greeny said.

A native of Davenport, Wash., Greeny was a standout player for Cougars coach Cindy Fredrick in the 1990s. She helped lead the Cougs to an NCAA regional appearance in 1996, was a three-time All-Pac-10 selection and surpassed 1,000-career kills.

Later, she was an assistant coach for Fredrick in 2000-04, again helping the Cougs to a Regionals appearance in '02.

After a stint in the high school ranks with the Greyhounds, Greeny was hired at LCSC in 2007. She compiled a 112-24 record and four Frontier Conference coach of the year honors in four years with the Warriors. Greeny owns a 321-191 overall record as a college head coach.

When Greeny took over at WSU in 2010, she inherited a team that went winless in conference play the previous season. By 2013, the Cougars had a winning record of 19-15, and in 2016 Greeny was named the Pac-12 coach of the year after going 22-12 and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tourney.

"Jen Greeny is a proven winner and program builder," Baker said. "She has built two volleyball programs into consistent powerhouses and has excelled at the Power Five level. When we began our search, she was the type of coach and winner that we were looking to bring to Morgantown, and this is an exciting hire for West Virginia volleyball."

Greeny leaves the Palouse with 10 total coach of the year honors and has had 10 Cougar players earn AVCA All-American selections.

She takes over a West Virginia program that went 9-22 overall and 2-16 in the Big 12 this past season.

"I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to lead the West Virginia volleyball program," Greeny said. "I am eager to embark on this new journey in Morgantown."
