Washington County high school sports team power rankings for Sept. 18

Announcing The Herald-Mail's Washington County high school fall sports team power rankings through Sept. 16.

  • 1. North Hagerstown boys soccer — Even without star midfielder Drew Lobley, the Hubs are undefeated (5-0) with a 17-0 scoring margin, as goalie Darius Geaman has recorded five shutouts. They are coming off a 1-0 victory in overtime over defending Class 3A state champion Tuscarora.

North Hagerstown's Walker Mason leads a pack of runners including Winters Mill's Jackson Steinbrenner and North's Rishi Bhat about a mile into the Rebel Invitational boys race. Steinbrenner won in 17:02.4, while Mason placed third in 17:12.6 as Washington County's top finisher and Bhat finished fifth in 17:31.7. The Hubs placed five runners in the top 10 to easily win the team title.
  • 2. North Hagerstown boys cross country — In the Rebel Invitational, with all county teams participating, the Hubs placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 10 and won the team title with 35 points, 100 points ahead of Boonsboro, which was the next-best county squad. Also won the Run in the Valley team title at Middletown.

  • 3. Williamsport boys soccer — The Wildcats are undefeated (4-0) and coming off a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Clear Spring in the Stan Stouffer Showcase semifinals. They boast an 18-5 scoring margin.

  • 4. North Hagerstown volleyball — The Hubs' cast of characters, from the head coach through the roster, has significantly changed from last year's Class 3A state title-winning squad, but the early results have been the same. North is 2-0 with two sweeps, including a win over Smithsburg in three tight sets.

  • 5. Williamsport girls soccer — The Wildcats are off to a 3-0 start, outscoring their opponents 26-3. Red-hot senior Lauren Toms has scored 16 goals, netting six against South Hagerstown and Catoctin, and four against Spring Mills.

  • 6. Boonsboro golf — The Warriors won the county public schools tournament for the seventh straight season, edging South Hagerstown by four strokes. Kadan Jones won the boys individual title in a playoff, and Piper Meredith was the girls champion.

  • 7. Clear Spring volleyball — The defending Class 1A state champion Blazers are 3-0 with a 9-1 sets record, including a four-set victory over South Hagerstown.

  • 8. Clear Spring boys soccer — Despite the setback to Williamsport, the Blazers have still been formidable to start the season, with a 4-1 record, a 14-5 scoring margin and quality victories over Mountain Ridge and Brunswick.

  • 9. Boonsboro football — The Warriors (2-1) opened the season with a narrow victory at Catoctin, which defeated Williamsport on Thursday. Boonsboro also beat Liberty before falling to undefeated Brunswick.

  • 10. Saint James volleyball — The Saints are 8-0 with a 20-3 sets record and won the McConnellsburg Tournament, sweeping all eight sets they played.
