In an effort to still find answers about who will be the Buffalo Bills third starting wide receiver entering the season, the competition has been too close to call. Marquise Goodwin, Walter Powell, Greg Salas, Greg Little, and Dez Lewis have all been in fierce competition throughout training camp and the preseason.

However, while some have fallen by the wayside — Dez Lewis — or been affected by injury — Marquise Goodwin — the battle is still too close for even the coaching staff to call. In fact, head coach Rex Ryan has already gone on record speaking to the Buffalo Bills web guru’s that he is still waiting to see some separation between the contending players.

“I think there is good competition there still,” he said. “You’re not just competing with our roster you’re competing with the whole league. I’ve been really encouraged by Walter Powell. I think he’s done a nice job for us in the return game and as a receiver. You see things from everybody that they can play. I don’t think anybody has jumped out and taken a job yet. That’s something that we’ll continue to watch going into this last preseason game.”

A player that has performed at quite a high level thus far this preseason is Walter Powell; a player that Ryan mentioned by name during his comments. Not only catching his fare share of passes during the preseason, Powell has also been racking up the yards thus far and could be set for a prime role during the team’s final preseason game at the Detroit Lions.

Thus far this preseason, Powell has caught 12-passes on 18-targets while also recording 189-yards receiving. Also contributing in the kick return game, Powell has proven to be a multi-functional player for the Bills this preseason. Despite his lack of experience when it comes to playing in the NFL, the third-year player has thus far showed the talent needed to succeed.

With the final week of the preseason be used as the ultimate determination for this battle at wide receiver, the Buffalo Bills and there receivers have some work to do this week. Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods will be leading the way for sure, but who will also be starting with them?

In my mind, while he is not listed as one of the leaders on the depth chart, Walter Powell’s stats this preseason could see him make his way up the depth chart. Whether or not he is also doing that in the coaches minds’ is another idea entirely.
