Vote for Week 7 Athlete of the Week; Holiday season and Week 6 winners announced

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Voting is now open for the Week 7 Athlete of the Week Award. Vote now for your favorite athlete performance of Week 7 of the high school winter sports season.

There's no limit to voting counts, so vote often. Voting is open until Saturday, Jan. 25. The winners of each athlete of the week award will be featured in an end of the year photo gallery in the Hillsdale Daily News and will be up for Reader's choice Athlete of the Year.

Athletes from the same school may be nominated for the same award poll, and athletes can be nominated more than once after receiving the honor.

Nominees

  • Caiden Baker - Reading Wrestling: Baker was one of three Rangers who took second place at the Napoleon Invitational wrestling tournament over the weekend. Baker took second in the 157-weight class, leading the team with two pinfall victories in the first two rounds and then winning a 6-1 decision to reach the championship match.

  • Warrick Elder - Jonesville Boys Basketball: Elder led the Comets to wins over East Jackson and Homer in Week 7. The senior had 37 total points for the week in two big Cascade wins to extend the team's overall record to 10-3 heading into Week 8.

  • Madison Recob - Will Carleton Academy Basketball: Recob led the WCA girls basketball team to a 29-28 win over Pansophia Academy, their first win of this season. The junior had eight points and a standout defensive effort to help lead her team to victory.

  • Abby Bills - Litchfield Girls Basketball: Bills led the Terrier girls prep hoops team to a 57-20 win over Tekonsha, their highest points total so far this season. Bills had 18 points, five assists and seven steals.

  • Mikayla DeBoe - Jonesville Girls Bowling: The Jonesville boys and girls bowling teams swept Vandercook Lake to keep their winning streaks alive. The Comet girls bowling team remained undefeated this year. Leading the girls bowling team was Mikayla DeBoe with a 211-234-445 series.

  • Shalee Van Heerde - Hillsdale Girls Bowling: The Hillsdale varsity girls bowling team defeated Adrian Madison in a league match and had an impressive showing at the Tecumseh jamboree. Shalee Van Heerde led the team against Madison with a 215-286-401 series. At Tecumseh, Van Heerde led the way again with a 195-214-409 series total.

  • John Petersen - Hillsdale Wrestling: Hillsdale junior John Petersen led all county wrestlers with a first-place finish at the Hudson Super 16 tournament. His run to the championship finish in the 215-weight class included pinfalls and a sudden victory match in the semifinals. He pinned the D3 No. 14 ranked Landon King of Dundee to take the top podium finish. Petersen is undefeated so far this season and has won the Sand Creek Invitational in addition to his Hudson Super 16 win.

  • Evan McColley - Jonesville Wrestling: McColley had two six-point victories to help the Comets defeat Addison and Homer in a league quad meet. Over the weekend, McColley earned a shot at the third-place podium finish at the Hudson Super 16 Invitational. He would place fourth for the Comets, the highest medal finish for the team that day.

Week 6 and Holiday Season Athlete of the Week Results

Congratulations to Reading junior Aubree Ervans for winning the Holiday Season Athlete of the Week.

Ervans earned a double-double game of 24 points and 12 rebounds to help the team beat Big 8 rival Quincy in their 2024 debut game.

Holiday season honorable mentions included Isaac Westfall, Isaac Shively, Alexis Trine, Gavin Van Kampen, Jack Bowles, Miles Brown and Karsyn Stebbins.

Congratulations to Litchfield senior Junior Alvarez for winning the Week 6 athlete of the week award. Alvarez dropped 29 points in one game, including five triples to defeat North Adams-Jerome.

Week 6 honorable mentions include Andrew Sackett, Ava Mallar, Jack Bowles, Robert Garcia, Cooper Stevens, Jeremiah Bedford and Haley Mach of Jonesville.
