Record Athlete of the Week: Lodi's Savanna Berry

The votes are in and Savanna Berry of Lodi swimming and diving is the Record Athlete of the Week for the week of May 7-13. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Berry received over 50% of the votes cast for a total of 4,780 votes.

The senior diver earned this recognition following a stellar season in the water that led her to the CIF State Swim and Dive Meet at Clovis West High on May 11. During the state meet, Berry worked her way to the podium finishing eighth among the top 28 divers in California. She was the only Sac-Joaquin Section diver to make the top 10.

Berry ended the meet with a score of 490.05 and earned the Flames a total of 11 team points. The state meet marks the final dive of her high school career, but she’s not stopping there. She will be competing collegiately next year at the University of Denver.

  • Savanna Berry, swimming and diving, Lodi: Berry represented the Flames at the CIF State Swim and Dive Meet at Clovis West on May 1. The senior diver earned a spot on the podium placing eighth out of 28 top divers in California. Following her final high school dive Berry will take her talents to the University of Denver.

  • Bella “Jorge” Hernandez, softball, Stagg: In the Delta Queens final game of the regular season against Chavez on May 10 Hernandez shined. She led her team’s offense ending the game with a home run, a double, four RBIs and two runs. The sophomore had the hottest bat giving Stagg a 7-0 victory.

  • Gavin Mora, baseball, Lodi: During the first round of the Sac- Joaquin Section Division 2 playoffs, Mora was a key contributor for Lodi. The senior catcher protected home plate and added a double and two RBIs to help the Flames beat Mountain House 6-4. This helped his team advance to the quarterfinals.

  • Gary Scannavino, baseball, St. Mary’s: Scannavino answered the call when the Rams backs were against the wall on May 11 against Folsom. The senior outfielder went three-for-three with his at bats finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Scannavino’s clutch at bats helped St. Mary’s take the game 6-1 in the sixth inning.

  • Cameron Williams, track and field, West: At the SJS Division I Prelims/ Finals on May 12 Williams took home gold in the 300-meter hurdles and the 4x100 meter relay. The junior finished with a time of 38.62 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles to set a personal record. He was West’s anchor in the 4x100 meter relay and they finished with a time of 42.70 seconds.

  • Briyanna Word, track and field, Chavez: Word set a personal record during the SJS Division II Prelims/ Finals on May 12 for the 200 meter race with a time of 24.56 seconds. This personal record also got her first place in the event. She beat out 21 other runners in both the prelims and the finals.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras and Amador counties. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
