Record Athlete of the Week: Ripon's Reyna Biedermann

The votes are in and the Record/Recordnet.com Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 6-12 is Reyna Biedermann of Ripon girls water polo. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Biedermann recieved 75% of the votes cast for a total of 9,931 votes.

All fall the freshman has shinned for the Indians as they made a stellar run throughout the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 playoffs. After leading Ripon past Sonora on Nov. 6 she continued to shine and this time on the biggest stage.

On Nov. 11 the Indians had rematch against Christian Brothers for the SJS Division 3 championship. Biedermann ended the game with a team-high five goals and five steals as an absolute beast on both sides of the ball for Ripon. The Indians snagged the blue banner beating the Falcons 13-3. She didn't have enough to help her team make a deep run in the CIFNorCal Girls Water Polo Championship Division III bracket as they lost in the first round.

From the glorious Friday Night Lights to making a big splash in the pool, athletes hailing from the 209 have been showing out. With fall sports wrapped up for most teams, the lucky few to still be competing are hoping to walk away with a section championship or even a state championship.

This week’s poll will include athletes from the following fall sports: football, girls' volleyball, and girls’ water polo. The poll closes on Friday.

Here are the candidates for Nov. 6-12 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Reyna Biedermann, girls’ water polo, Ripon: The Indians are one of two teams remaining in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff bracket. Biedermann played a key role in helping get them there during their Nov. 7 game against Sonora. She ended the game with a team-high seven goals and a steal to help Ripon take down the Wildcats 17-8.

Asante Carter, football, St. Mary’s: St. Mary’s blew right past their SJS Division 2 quarterfinal opponent on Nov. 10. Carter led the Rams on the ground rushing for 54 yards and three touchdowns from one, two and three yards out. He helped them beat the Bulldogs 36-0 thus punching their ticket to the semifinals against No. 4 seed Manteca.

Bryson Davis, football, Manteca: Someone needed to save the day after Manteca went scoreless in the first half against Granite Bay in the quarterfinals. Davis answered the call. The senior running back carried the ball 28 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns. His bruiser-like running helped the Buffaloes escape with a 21-14 victory over the Grizzlies.

Sydney Hoffman, girls’ volleyball, Ripon Christian: The Knights are the only remaining San Joaquin County girls’ volleyball team still competing for a state championship. Hoffman, a senior middle blocker for Ripon Christian, has played an essential role throughout the entire season. She leads her team in blocks with nearly 40 and has the highest hitting percentage of 0.449.

Kylie Richardson, girls’ water polo, Lodi: Richardson did all she could do in Lodi’s final victory of the season against River City. The senior goalkeeper not only makes saves for the Flames but she is a vital part of their offense. She ended the game with four assists and 12 saves to beat the Raiders 7-3. The Flames couldn’t get past Granite Bay in their next match and ended their season in the SJS Division 1 semifinals.

Donavon Rozevink, football, Escalon: Rozevink threw for 167 yards and four touchdowns as Escalon bulldozed past Sacramento in the SJS Division 4 quarterfinals. The 6-foot-3 built quarterback made every pass count against the Dragons who just couldn’t stop the Cougars' offense. They beat Sacramento 57-32 and will return to the comforts of Engle Field to host No. 5 seed West Park on Nov. 17.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin County. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
