Record Athlete of the Week: St. Mary's McKenna McIntosh

The votes are in and The Record/RecordNet.com Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 10-16 is McKenna McIntosh of St. Mary's girls volleyball. In an online poll that closed on Friday, McIntosh received over 50% of the votes cast for a total of 2,173 votes.

As just a freshman, McIntosh is leading the Rams offensively. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter is currently averaging a team-high 4.8 kills per set wracking up 179 total kills so far this season. In St. Mary's league opener against Lodi, McIntosh was near unstoppable sending lethal kills past Lodi defenders. She led her team to a 3-0 victory with 15 kills and three aces.

McIntosh's stellar performance has helped the Rams to an 18-1 overall record and a 2-0 start to Tri-City Athletic League play. They are sitting atop the ranks in the Sac-Joaquin Section ranked No.1 and ranked No. 13 in California. With a talented roster including McIntosh, St. Mary's is looking to blow through the TCAL and make a deep run in the playoffs like it did last season.

Fall sports in San Joaquin County are approaching midseason which means league play has either started or is about to start for teams. Athletes from the 209 have had stellar performances this week across multiple sports including football, girl’s volleyball, girls’ flag football, and cross country. The poll for Athlete of the Week closes on Friday.

Here are the candidates for Sept. 10-16 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Mikayla Bueno, cross country, Sierra: Bueno worked her way up in the rankings in the Valley Oak League’s #1 Cluster Meet on Sept. 13. In the varsity girls’ three-mile race, the senior finished in second place with a time of 20 minutes and 34 seconds. She finished just nine seconds off from the first-place time.

Trevor Van Elderen, football, Ripon Christian: Van Elderen had his best game of the season against Denair on Sept. 15. The junior running back rushed for four touchdowns from as far as 27 yards out. He led Ripon Christian’s offense to a big 42-0 win over the Coyotes.

Marcus Harrison, football, Edison: In Edison's annual game against Stagg on Sept. 15, no one could guard Harrison. The 5-foot-9 junior caught a season-high 275 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were from over 40 yards. He helped the Vikings win the game 34-0.

Aria Khan, girls’ flag football, Tokay: Khan threw for 280 yards on over 60% completion in the Tigers’ 34-0 victory over West on Sept. 14. She ended the game with five passing touchdowns connecting with three different wide receivers. Tokay is now on a five-game winning streak.

McKenna McIntosh, girls’ volleyball, St. Mary’s: McIntosh’s lethal hitting helped St. Mary’s sweep Lodi in its Tri-City Athletic League opener on Sept. 14. The freshman outside hitter the Rams offense with 15 kills and three aces. She is currently averaging five kills per set the most on her team.

Donovan Rozevink, football, Escalon: Rozevink led the Cougars' offense past the previously undefeated Oakdale. The 6-foot-3 senior slinger threw 17 of 25 for a career-high 285 yards and five passing touchdowns. The Cougars would go on to beat the Mustangs 41-21 on Sept. 15.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin County. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
