There are five nominees every week, and fans can vote every Monday through Wednesday at coloradoan.com/sports/high-school-sports.

As we hit the new calendar year, here is the 13th edition of the 2023-24 school year for the week of Jan. 1-6.

You can find the ballot at the bottom of the page. Voting is open until 11 p.m. Wednesday each week, with the winner announced on Thursday at Coloradoan.com and via the Coloradoan's Instagram page.

Previous winner: Fort Collins basketball's Jayce King named Blue Federal Credit Union's Athlete of the Week

Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Sunday) and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the five nominees each week.

If you have nominations for a future Athlete of the Week, please send them via email to ChrisAbshire@coloradoan.com for consideration.

The following athletes were nominated for their performances last week:

  • Sara Chicco, Rocky Mountain girls basketball: The Lobos' senior continued her phenomenal senior campaign in the new year, scoring 43 points over two games in blowout Rocky wins over Greeley Central and Loveland. Chicco shot over 50% from the field, made seven 3-pointers and didn't miss a free throw in the two games.

  • Sarah Lindquist, Poudre girls swimming: The Impalas' senior won a triple dual meet one-meter diving title for Poudre against Fort Collins, Legacy and Brighton. Lindquist earned the win with a score of 207.6 points, nearly 10 better than the runner-up finish.

  • Evan Perez, Windsor wrestling: The Wizards' sophomore and defending state champion looks the part again. Perez romped to the 190-pound title at the Arnold 'Torgy' Torgerson Memorial on Saturday, winning his first two matches via pin and then beating Fossil Ridge's Connor Jacquot by 19-2 technical fall in the finals.

  • Ben Rios, Fort Collins wrestling: The Lambkins' junior impressed at the Torgy in the highest weight class, claiming the 285-pound title against some tough local competition. Rios beat Wellington's Tanner Gray and Severance's Quinn Anderson before pinning a Grand Junction Central wrestler early in the second period of the final match. Rios is now 17-3 this season.

  • Wade Suckow, Fort Collins wrestling: The Lambkins' junior was another local winner at the Torgy, taking the 157-pound title with three match wins via decision by an average score of 7-3, defeating Windsor's Adrian Czyszczon in a semifinal and University's Allen Mix in the finals. Suckow is now 17-2 overall this season.
