Voorhees football snaps losing streak with huge win at Bound Brook

BOUND BROOK – When the Voorhees High School football team is on its game, the Vikings run, make opponents miss, and break tackles to get bonus yards.

That was certainly the case Friday night.

The Vikings slammed Bound Brook 48-0 in a Big Central Football Conference Gold Division game at George M. LaMonte Field.

Bound Brook suffered a big loss early when junior quarterback Jeremiah Norwood left because of a leg injury on the first series of the game and didn’t return.

After losing consecutive division games to Delaware Valley and Bernards, the Vikings rolled in taking their second straight convincing victory over Bound Brook. They won 41-6 last season.

Four different backs scored touchdowns. They even threw their first two touchdown passes of the season – from two different quarterbacks, Isaac Leviton and Nolan Jowaiszas - something coach Rick Kurtz loves to see - being a fan of the pass game.

But it’s on the ground that Voorhees lives, and Kurtz has reminded them that there is a lot of ability around to help.

“We have a good little stable of backs and it's fun when they get going,” said Kurtz.

Voorhees got going in the first quarter on a 21-yard TD run by senior back Brandon Kurzeja and Leviton made it 14-0 on a five-yard run with 2:29 left in the first quarter. Kurzeja’s second TD – on a 31-yarder extended the lead to 20-0

The Vikings also block well. Tight end Travis Cryan, left tackle Cameron Baumann, left guard Rudy Roddy, Kyle Borgh, right guard Dylan Varela and right tackle Lucas Knagenhjelm had a very productive night.

Voorhees ran for 325 yards with Antonio Sauchelli (3-95), Levitan (4-91) and Kurzeja (6-80) leading the way. Cryan and Rylan Benitez had the receiving touchdowns.

“We run the ball like crazy, but I love throwing being a former quarterback, but it's nice to use all the backs and get them all in the game,” said Kurtz. “I went up to Sauchelli [sophomore Antonio) and told him he was the only back who hadn’t been in the end zone yet. Well, on the first play of the second half, he scores on a long run.”

Sophomore Logan Direny had an interception to set up the first touchdown.

Voorhees plays host to South River Friday night in another division game. Bound Brook plays at division rival Delaware Valley Friday night.

Voorhees raised its record to 2-3 and 1-2 in the Big Central Patriot Gold Division. Bound Brook, which stopped a 12-game losing streak last week, fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in division.
