VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Windthorst tops initial TRN Top 10 rankings

It’s time for local volleyball to have a TRN Top 10 like many of the other team sports we cover.

The TRN Top 10 is subjective and represents a team’s relevance in its district and regional playoffs. However, unlike the football version, head-to-head matchups may be weighted more since it’s not uncommon for teams in lower classifications to beat those in higher. But if a team doesn’t project as well in its district or region, then an opponent it may have a win against could be ranked higher.

1. Windthorst (35-4) – The Trojanettes have looked the part of defending state champions throughout the season. While they did graduate some key pieces from last year’s state title team, the Trojanettes are capable of adding yet another state title marker in front of the high school gym.

2. Nocona (29-6) – Nocona made a deep run in the playoffs last season and owns a victory against Windthorst. The Lady Indians have to be considered a top contender to win Region II-2A and join the Trojanettes at the state tournament.

3. Holliday (14-6) – We haven’t received game stats consistently from the Lady Eagles (the listed record is likely incorrect but the best information we have), but the results speak volumes. This team has reloaded instead of needing a rebuild and will be a force in the Region I-3A bracket.

4. Henrietta (21-7) – The Lady Cats own two wins against Nocona and are 1-2 against Windthorst, so there’s an argument to put them at the top of these rankings. But a five-set home loss keeps them from being the favorite in their own district, relegating them to fourth instead. Regardless, this is one of the best teams in the area with a chance to make a lot of noise in the postseason.

5. Benjamin (30-6) – Benjamin advanced to the state tournament last season and returned enough talent to make a return trip, although the path is tougher than a year ago.

6. Harrold (30-5) – And Harrold is the main reason the path is more difficult. The Lady Hornets had a breakout season and were a threat to Benjamin last season. They returned almost everyone and haven’t had a letdown.

7. Christ Academy (19-12-2) – Based on the paragraph introducing these rankings, Christ Academy has an argument to be No. 1. No one projects better to win a state title than the Lady Warriors but dominating TAPPS Class A has become too easy for this program. And several of the teams in these rankings have beaten Christ Academy. But props to the Lady Warriors for always playing the best in the area.

8. Iowa Park (22-13) – One of the teams that has beaten Christ Academy is Iowa Park, winning a five-set thriller a couple weeks ago. But the Lady Hawks also rank a respectable third in District 7-3A. That’s going to make for a very tough first-round playoff matchup.

9. Graham (21-13) – Just because Graham is in a district with no other local teams doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about the Lady Blues. They’re third in the competitive District 6-4A have a straight sets victory against Windthorst on the resume. There’s also a five-set loss to Iowa Park.

10. Electra (19-9) – Speaking of Benjamin’s tougher road above, Electra remains competitive since the drop to Class A and is currently state-ranked by the TGCA. Another team to watch in the region is Graford.
