Quincy volleyball caps regular season with win, pair of three-set losses

QUINCY - The Quincy volleyball team had a busy final week of the 2023 regular season, hosting a pair of non-conference matchups on Thursday after spending Tuesday on the road as they prepare for the Michigan High School Athletic Assocation (MHSAA) postseason starting next week.

The Orioles struggled in their final games of the regular season on Thursday, falling to Napoleon in two sets and Centreville in three sets.

Danika Skirka led the team in kills with 14, followed by Alyssa McCavit with 12, Anna Richer with seven, Josie Mescher with seven, and Lita Fulton with five.

Elly Brewer, this week’s Breathe Free Duct Cleaning Athlete of the Week, led the Orioles in assists with 30 and finished second on the team in digs with 18.

Olivia Davenport had a big day defensively from the libero position, recording a team high 37 digs, followed by McCavit with six and Mescher with 12. Mescher also added 12 assists for the Orioles while Davenport chipped in with three.

Richer led the way in blocks with two while Skirka led the team in aces with three.

Quincy also took the night to honor their seniors in their final home game: Alyssa McCavit, Elly Brewer, Lita Fulton, Josie Mescher, Anna Richer, and Payton Gross.

“Tonight, we honored six seniors who have devoted so much to the volleyball program and made a big impact on the future upcoming players,” Quincy coach Alixandra Neitzert said.

On Tuesday, Quincy split a non-conference tri match, beating Durand in two sets before falling to Bath in three sets.

Skirka led the team in kills with 14, followed by McCavit with 11, Richer with seven, Mescher with five, and Fulton with five.  Skirka also led the team in blocks with six, while Kyha Brewer led the team in aces with three.

In digs it was Davenport pacing the way with 39, followed by Mescher with 30, Brewer with 18, McCavit with 15, and Skirka with 15. Finally, Brewer led the team in assists with 22 while Mescher added 19.

Quincy will look to make some noise in the MHSAA postseason beginning Monday for a Division Three pre-district match. The Orioles face Hudson (1-17) at Jonesville High School, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The winner will advance on to face Jonesville in the semifinals on Wednesday.
