PETE THAMEL: This is Pete Thamel, college football reporter for Yahoo Sports. One of the most successful coaches in the history of college football is on his way to the NFL. Sources told Yahoo Sports today that Urban Meyer, the three-time national champion college football coach, is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

It will certainly be one of the most fascinating football experiments in the game. Meyer has a career record of 187-32 over 17 seasons as a college football head coach. But he has no experience in the NFL, and he inherits a compelling situation as there's no set general manager, the number one pick, which is expected to be Trevor Lawrence, 11 draft picks in the upcoming draft, and somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million in salary cap space. Essentially, the Jaguars are valuing Meyer's ability to come in, create a new culture, establish a program, and be a strong leader to move the franchise into a new era.

Will it work? That's going to be one of the most fascinating questions in football in the upcoming years, as Meyer had intermittent health issues and only lost nine games in seven seasons as a college head coach in his last stop at Ohio State. He'll certainly be losing about that many games this season as the Jaguars undergo a rebuild, and a lot of eyes in the sport of football head to Jacksonville to see how Urban Meyer does.
